Casing confusion
    #811842 - 08/12/02 12:03 AM (14 years, 11 months ago)

Since my first run at growing shrooms was an awesome success (PF cakes) I decided I should graduate to casing. I have read a lot about casing but have a couple general questions.

1.) When I crumble the cakes to be cased wont they get bruised and damaged? Can they recover from this and still flush out?

2.) How can the mycellium grow through the casings? I thought they needed nutrients, and the casings only provide moisture......as far as I know. So it seems the mycellium couldn't stray far from the crumbled cakes providing the nutrients.

3.) Does oyster shell just provide more needed moisture or nutrients?

4.) "Sea of Shrooms" TEK says to cut the cake into two pieces.......is this better then crumbling the cake?

1. Yes.
2. The cakes provide the nutrients and optimally, the rizomes colonize the casing layer.
3. No, it helps buffer the pH.
4. I like to crumble similar to the Hongus Tek.

if u crumble it with ur hands in a plastic bag, or with gloves it prevents bruising, at least with mine

if you really want to do it right and have a pressure cooker use grain instead of rice. grain like rye berries or millet (birdseed) actually crumble with very little effort into individual kernels. i have seen great success with this tek

another nice thing about grain is that it can be shaken to speed colonization. when the mycelium starts to grow, shake the jar to all hell to spread the mycelium all around. also, when you crumble your cakes you could mix them with a bulk substrate like manure or straw to increase yield

sorry to get off topic, but just trying to give you a few more ideas
