Another IT Guy Rant
    #8112433 - 03/06/08 06:11 PM (16 years, 2 months ago)

So I just do not know, I enjoy my job, but this was my day today.

The IT manager and the Network Administrator start talking to me about installing some new software on hundreds of computers at our main office and a couple hundred more in other branches. So they tell me OK we are going to need you to spend a few weeks visiting all of our branches and installing this program on each PC we have one at a time.

They had me do the same thing with Windows Updates on every damn computer, hundreds of computers one at a damn time.

Today when they mentioned it to me again I once again said, why on Earth would we waste all of that time when we can do it a hundred times faster just doing a unattended installation from the network administrators computer. I said listen I can figure this out and show everyone how this is done. You know, create a answer file or a friggin sysprep image or something. Do all this sh.t without driving all over the place and doing all the PCs at once instead of one at a time.

I did not mention, you know, if you are the network administrator for all of these branches and all of these computers don't you think he would understand how to do elementary things like this. You know, do it correctly and not waste weeks of time when it can be done in a hour or two.

Unfreakin believable. I have a feeling they are going to start me installing this crappola one computer at a time tomorrow. Unbelievable...

So after that they sent me and this other IT Guy out to a branch office to remove computers and set up computers and all of that. This guy is completely a scatterbrain like I have never witnessed. We have a list of things we need to do and he starts working on setting up a docking station when that is not even what we were sent out to do. The guy scatterbrained on the docking station for at least a hour (this has happened before). So I just call the IT manager and tell him he is doing it again and to call him on his cell to let him know not to get off of track with what we were sent to do. I start getting some flat screens gathered up to bring back to the main office in the truck and scatterbrain decides we need a box to put them in. A Half Hour Later he comes up to me with a box after I already put the flatscreens in the truck safely, then he goes into the truck and pulls a big spagetti mess of phones and cables trying to get to the flatscreens. He grabs 4 of the 8 flatscreens and puts them on the ground and then I watch the guy assemble the friggin cardboard box. 10 minutes later the box is finally assembled and he fits two god damn flat screens in the box and is all satisfied now that two of the either monitors are in a friggin box. And it was just one thing after another with him and always is. Constant mass confusion. If you ask him to set up a computer station he will start by reconfiguring the friggin tablets and, just a complete scatterbrain. He is a nice guy though that is why we keep him.

Then the other IT Guy. This dude gets paid a whole lot. And is a alcoholic. He knows his computer technology very well but constantly skips work because he is drunk or in rehab. He is a great guy, just has the alcohol problem. We all like him a lot but just do not know what to do because we cant and wont fire the guy. So yesterday he was at work completely pastered. Dozens of other employees mentioned it to the IT manager and probably HR. His face was red, his speech was slurred, his eyes were glassy and he was being overly friendly with people and occassionally being completely grumpy out of no where. Everyone could smell the damn booze, everywhere he walked it left a alcohol smelly trail. Then today the IT manager brought me in to the office to tell me the story. He said the drunk IT Guy had a brief meeting with him in his office asking him about it. This is nothing new by the way, my boss is very very cool I think and has done a lot to help the drunk IT Guy but he simply cannot stop drinking for very long. My boss says that he denied it, saying that he was on allergy medicine.. so I related a quick explanation about the disease and mentioned you know, c'mon now, the guy is a known struggling alcoholic who has almost lost his job dozens of times over this, and after walking around the building all day long sometimes hiding for a hour or two at a time, he was not able to mention to anyone that oh yeah I am not intoxicated I am on allergy medication. heh. He is a great guy don't get me wrong. Brilliant with computers. hehe today it was the same thing, he still stunk like a bottle of Gin and was trashed and told the manager after being asked about it that he couldn't drive home today and needed a cab...

So I am walking through the building and some girl stops me and asks why she was getting some kind of encription numerals and symbols on the top of the pages when she printed something using this specific program. I am like oh yeah someone at the other branch showed me the same thing, use another one of your programs because that one is not compatible with a HP printer. She could not believe it. Asking me how I can fix it. I'm like I just told you use MS Word or something else, everyone has plenty of options and they all work except the one you are using. Computer illiterate insanity ensued. You know, you have been using this computer for years now and you do not know how to copy and paste a document? What kind of world do we live in.

End of IT Guy rant of the day.

I can't believe I just read all that. Either my forum parsing skills are broken, or you need to enclose that bad boy in <rant> tags.

I do know how ya feel though. With your fellow IT "Professionals" you are always going to run into the occasional dunce and of course every job has their raging alcoholic. Just go to work, get it done, then go home and relax. No need beating yourself up over it.

Its always a good idea to automate your job, but never tell your boss that you have automated everything.

As long as you're getting paid the other people are not your concern dude. Take it easy and do your own job quietly, don't fuck with anyone else's. At the end of the day NONE of this shit matters and there will always be more work to do after whatever task you finish. Sounds like you got a cool boss and a nice job. Be thankful and have a nice day!
