Where do you live? Know exactly what you are looking for.If your not 100 percent sure throw it out.Tons of the mushrooms out there are poisonous and WILL kill you. There are even look alikes to psilocybes out there that are EXTREMELY poisonous get a mushroom field guide.

Your parents are a little paranoid, but they are correct. Several small mushrooms like the galerina, conocybes, and inocybes look just like psilocybes but they don't get you high they eat your liver give you projectile vomit and lots of death. be carful when hunting, buy a field guide, don't be stupid. I found what i thought were P. cyans, looked just like em' until i did a sporeprint. I was gonna eat them and everything but the print was rust brown. shit i almost maybe killed myself.

Listen Knoxville... Payton Manning is turning out to be one hell of a QB.

It's fine to ask this question, but REALLY, man, fully a third of all mushrooms are toxic, and a quarter of THAT third is toxic in "a good way" - the rest will either kill you or make you writhe in agony, and shit blood. First thing you must do is by 2 filed guides. 1) Psilocybin Mushrooms of the World and 2)the Audobon flied guide to North American mushrooms.

And look around this sight for info on identification and hunting...

actually there are only a very few mushroom species toxic enuff to kill you. I would avoid the Amanita genus. An overwhelming majority of the so called toxic mushrooms will give u a mild upset stomach. Without the Amanitas and Galerinas, there would be much less mycophobia.
of course, you'd be crazy to pick mushrooms and eat them without years of experience in that area. Even choice edibles like the morel, cause stomach pain in some people.

Don't flame me if this is misinformation, but in a book I read, it said there are 14 deadly mushrooms. It also mentioned that some mushrooms are deadly if you eat enough of them (Amanita muscaria was listed under that category). There are probably many many more that will make you sick.
