being over cautious might have fucked me?
    #8111566 - 03/06/08 03:24 PM (16 years, 10 months ago)

Can someone please help me out?

The bruising in the photo below was lighter, then got dark like this, and hasn't changed in a few hours long so i'm assuming this is the worst of it.

It happened after i found a pin on the other side of the case with a small amount of green on the edge of the cap (like really really small amount), so i removed that rotting fucker, and i did one or two quick mists with some diluted bleach water (1:20) then h202 water (1:10) (to also keep away greens' whispy friend). After a few mins, i noticed this...

I know that bluish tints will fade in a few days, but this looks kinda serious to me as an inexperienced grower.

Also, i have a little guy that seems to have gone Emo on me. Any comments or suggestions on this one?

Thanks in advance for your help!

The one thats growing in odd directions was caused by light coming from a different direction rather than up. the shrooms will pin whichever way light hits em.
Do you have aluminum foil in your setup? thats usually what does it.

I'm a pretty new grower myself but I don't think the post above is true. The light may help the shrooms grow up, but if that was the case here, wouldn't they all be leaning the same way. Also, its very common for cakes to pin on the bottom where there should be the least amount of light. I think people say air exchange is more important in pinning. Sometimes the shooms just grow weird.  Your bruising doesn't seem too bad, still good eats

Shit, i was worried something like that might happen.

The funny thing is that it's the only one doing it, and it's in the middle of the casing, with dark all around and underneath. The foil is there, but it's only about 1cm above the horizon, and in the opposite direction from where this one is heading?

I'll reassess my foil usage, but could there be any other reason it would happen strictly to one fruit? Pre-abort maybe?

Maybe it really is emo and i should just buy it some skinny jeans and color it's cap black. :ass2mouth:

Don't spray with peroxide or bleach water. Both can cause aborts. The blue may or may not go away, but at least for now they're OK. You should be picking those within 48 hours anyway.

They dont all lean the same way and shrooms rarely ever do. I see at least one other pin going sideways. A camera flash is all the light needed to start pinning. Go look up dozens of grows. A single shroom might be going a different way due to the light THAT ONE PIN registered.
Pins grow from the bottom of cakes because the cakes are on alimunim foil! this gives light at the bottoms. DO some more reading and you will see what I mean.

...But that ones probably just an asshole and wanted to deviate from the rest.

WTF, Really?! They're only tiny though, probably only about 1.75 inches tall. You know better than i do and they do make great strides within a few hours but, shit, 48 hours huh? Sweet! Thanks for the prophecy!

I was hoping for a little more growth from them.

I think you might be right. I moved the foil out of the way when i had to remove the abort, and there were a shit load of knots forming on the sides of the casing. Closer to the top of the casing, the knots had started to form pins. The foil is on real loose, and i have flash lights on top for about an hour per day. The reflectivity must have brought light down the sides.

Either way, this was a first attempt and i learned a lot of what not to do, the loose foil being one, misting water cleanliness being the other.

I have a thread on here where i'm updating with pics from this grow, if anyone is interested:

RR was right, those 2 just boomed and actually will be ready. I didn't even think that would happen, but since i don't know much it was surprising.

They did end up doing fine after the disaster misting. Here is a new pic of the "blue crotch" from the first post...

The spraying did cause a few small pins to form aqua colored rings around the cap boundary. I'm keeping close watch on them to make sure they're still growing, if they stop for a few hours, then they're removed.

I had to remove "wilty" (the wilted one from the first post) because he didn't grow at all during the night and i figured just to remove it now instead of waiting for the inevitable.

I do have another one that is wilting so i guess that's 2 assholes in the mix.

Can anyone tell me if this is a bacterial thing. It's a gooey spot on the lighter cap of the two that are touching. There are a couple of other fruits that have this sort of thing going on.

Thanks Again!!

fuck drying, i want to try these bastards fresh. Never been able to do that before.

Most will go in tea, but one or two i want to eat just to taste them.

When tea is made, can i keep in the fridge for later (yeah right!) or do i have to drink right away?

I don't want to bias you but it was one of the most vile experiences I've been through . Texture of celery with all the taste of shrooms plus a little...that and more mass to chew .

really? I loved eating fresh mushies. I remember a short while ago I picked a couple cakes (from my first flush of my first grow) to a plate and was just eating them right off it. I loved the taste of em. I actually had to keep in mind I was eating hallucinogenic mushrooms and if I ate too much I would get way too high.

what do you guys do when there is a section (from dime sized to quarter sized) that has a bunch of small pinhead size pins, but some of them are already aborting?

I had a couple of sections like that and i just ended up getting rid of the whole section since my tweezers couldn't pick the specific ones.

Also, when harvesting, is it necessary to clear the entire surface of anything other than myc? I felt bad and kinda wierd getting rid of pins but i figured it's easier to start on a clean slate then constantly pick out micro aborts from pin colonies.

the aborted pins should be taken out when harvesting, but they make great living tissue samples. try to use em so you can have a later storage of fresh mycelium.

use a black trash bag instead of aluminum foil.

In the plastic tub i'm using, there is about 1cm of space all around the casing. I made some fresh casing mix and i'm going to use that to block light, provide moisture, and most importantly, replace the foil.

I have another casing that is basically 1 cake cut in half. That's done in this sort of way and it's working perfectly.
