Colonization while pinning?
    #8108991 - 03/05/08 11:15 PM (16 years, 10 months ago)

I have one jar that I guesstimate at 98% colonized, but its showing a few pins invitro. Will it continue to colonize? Id hate to have to birth this early.

Sorry if this has been posted before, but I cant find a definite answer anywhere.

if it's pinning already that means u have light hitting it at some time during the day keep it in a dark place and yes it will continue.

Light isn't a pinning trigger until full colonization of substrate (usually). You can birth the jar, clean off any uncolonized substrate and dunk roll etc. Or you can leave it alone to try and let it colonize that last little bit.

Well it doesn't seem to be covering the spot in question after a few days, so I went ahead and am dunking it right now.

The spot is covered by mycelium but, it has a few bits of visible verm. The cake is pinning like crazy, I've got 3 giant pins invitro and atleast 20 knots.

The jar has been colonizing for atleast 4 weeks, I'm sure it's ready to fruit. Hopefully it'll be okay.

Ready to fruit and pinning early are two separate things. If it's ready to fruit (which you have told us it's not, not completely colonized) it's good. If it's pinning early that usually means it THINKS it has fully colonized the substrate which can mean either mold, bacteria, or wet substrate. And I've had some jars colonizing for over two months so...yeah.

There isn't much one can do in this situation, the fruits are coming in non-stop and I'd rather them be given optimal conditions than let them strive to survive in that jar.

It could be bacteria, and a dunk in some h2o2 dilute might do some good.

The worst thing that could happen would be some aborted fruits, I believe. But I guess we'll have to see.

Don't dunk in H2O2! Don't spray with H2O2! Even a little bit. Now substitute the word bleach for both those sentences and repeat them. The worst thing that can happen is this: Your cake contams, you don't notice, it infects the rest of your cakes, they all get green mold, and then you die in a freak cock fighting incident...That's the worst thing. Aborted fruits is the least of your worries at this point. Dunking in any concentration of H2O2 just weakens the mycelium making it MORE prone to contamination rather than less. Well best of luck .
