in a a/b extraction of mescaline from powdered torch, i have seen two methods, add cactus directly to basified water and proceeded with the rest of the tek, but in some teks before they do that they cook the cactus in acidic water, boil down, defat with xylene, and then proceed with the basifcation and all that. Which would you recommend?

I have always gone straight to base, and then salted the mescaline out with hcl. Can't go wrong with that, turns out fuckin bomb everytime!

Well actually to extract mescaline you do a B/A. Basify the cactus powder, pull the alkaloids with toluene, add hcl to salt out the mescaline, then evaporate the acid water.

If it is powdered skins I would skip the defating stage.
If it is whole-plant powder I would defat.
Honestly though, if you have powder of just skins, you can get very pure and clean results without a defat.
Use toluene for the extraction, freeze precipitation for the salting and MEK (methyl ethyl ketone) for the purification and you will be good to go...
