Rats and cats

I have two cats - one who was an outdoor cat who's brought home dead mice, and the other is CONSTANTLY f-ing with things, anything he can find to play with - and I really want the both of them to get used to the rat and used to the idea he is a PET not a TOY. Does anyone know how to get the animals to be comfortable around each other or have any ideas? Especially since the cats seem to be attracted to the rat - not in a good way either :S

honistly its a long shot if the cat eats rodents. i my self have a rat and a cat, and the rat is deathly afraid of the cat, but the cat could care less for the rat. (the cats old though) just shun the cat if it motions like its gonna "play with" or eat the rat. it should learn eventuly.

Yeah, I'm having the same problem. You see I wanna get a pet goat, but my pet alligator eats them up as soon as they go to the water to drink..

When I had both rats and cats, one of the rats was a real badass ninja. She'd jump up against the bars of the cage and try to attack any cat that came in the room. The cats learned to keep their distance pretty quickly.
How that applies to your situation, I don't know. Maybe you could get a second rat, and try to pick one with a tough personality?

Cats with a strong prey drive are unlikely to become safe playmates for your rat. I would play it safe & keep the rattie in a closed room away from the cats.
I'm dealing with this issue right now, as I'm keeping my mother's cat while she is hospitalized. The cat is desperate to get in and see (eat?) my pet rat. The rat is terrified, and won't come out of her sleeping house unless the cat is downstairs.

I have been testing some limits today. I've showed the rat to the cats, I even got so far as setting the rat on the cats back (While I held her) and the cats gave her a quick sniff and then seemed freaked out by her. But man, when they look at her from a distance, their eyes are like SAUCERS and they have that evil look lol
