The curse of being the "IT Guy"
    #8098761 - 03/03/08 05:48 PM (16 years, 2 months ago)

Another reason the IT industry sucks.. when you have a specific job title like "programmer", or "Database analyist", or "network engineer"... these titles mean nothing and people are just going to call you..... "the IT guy".

Which means of course.. you can fix/do anything IT related...

Even when people call you on the phone and ask you to help them configure software you NEVER use, have any reason to use, or have ever seen... and they expect you know know it.... and when you tell them.. Uhh.. I've never used [insert obscure software title here] so I can't talk you through it on the phone ... they just sit there quiet on the end for a while before telling you how much they really really... need it set up.

.. like when we said we didn't know how to do it.. we were lying and waiting for them to REALLY REALLY need it to say.. "OH... since you REALLY need it.. sure... NOWWW I know how to do it .. you should have told me BEFORE that you needed it... let me snap my magic fucking fingers and just pull the knowledge out of the air then..."

Cuz I'm the IT MUTHA FUCKIN WIZARD

Just be glad that people assume you are so smart that you'd know the answer to any tech question they could throw your way.

I dig holes for a living.  Everyone assumes I am some poorly educated dimwit who got into construction because he wasn't smart enough to do anything else.

Assumptions...they're almost always wrong.

Imagine that everybody you know expects you to come dig holes for them whenever they need a hole dug, for free, because that is what you do for a living and they know you. It would get pretty old after a while.

BrAiN, I don't know if you read nntp news or not, but if so, give ASR (alt.sysadmin.recovery) a try. I think you will appreciate the humor of the group.

I like that people ask me if I'm a geek because my abilities surpass those required to send e-mail and do google search.

Were ancient Egyptian scribes geeks because they knew how to translate a variety of thoughts and words into a set of useful, decipherable hieroglyphics?

I'm totally burning out on computer shit... I can do stuff maybe like graphics or video and I'd be happy... but no more hardcore shit like programming and systems.

1 year...

I'm giving myself 1 MORE YEAR at this and I'm switching careers. PERIOD. I told myself when I finally saved up enough $ and got my credit up enough I was going to turn my back on all this puter shit and open a bar.

Fuck "whenever"... time to set a date. If I haven't put in an effort on this by March 4th 2009.. someone BAN me from the shroomery.

I'm not an IT guy but I know enough to stumble through most problems and even that has people calling me all the time to help with computer problems. I usually try to help and that's probably why they keep calling me.

On a similar note, my favorite cliche used most often by IT types is "there is no magic bullet to fix network problems."

You're in IT and have never heard that? I find that surprising. Over the past 4-5 years, I've heard it used at least 50 times by over a dozen IT/network types.

Oh I can completely understand how frustrating it must get.  I'm sure if people could figure out how to get me to dig their holes over the phone they'd be calling me up all the time.  And rest assured that plenty of people take advantage of my services as much as they think they can at times.  Sometimes the best friends are the ones who never ask for a favor!

I used to have a great "IT guy" at my last job. Used to burn me copies of 80s's Guns n Roses concerts & random movies. I think the only reason he did that was because I hardly ever asked him for shit. He used to go apeshit on certain people in the office if he thought they were stupid and it used to crack my ass up. Dude was like the McGyver with a computer though. I think it would be a good job to have, no?

It really depends upon the people you work with. It gets a bit annoying when people call you in a panic, on your day off, because "the wireless network is down"... and after canceling all your dive plans and getting into work find out that wireless network being down with a "no signal" on the monitor really means turn the damn computer on.

> Fuckin hell.. I'll trade you jobs.

My favorite part of the movie Office Space is the ending. Great movie if you haven't seen it.

I have this curse you speak of. Just because I am a web designer/programmer everyone assumes I can fix there problems. Family, friends, and friends of family and friends. I guess I am the dumb one because I usually don't refuse to help out, and almost never get paid for my help. I wish everyone would just google there problem first and follow the steps. Hell there's almost always something to fix your problem on google. It just gets really annoying when I am trying to code and explain something at the same time when someone calls. Thanx for the post at least I know someone else feels my pain.

The MOST annoying one is when my coimputer-illiterate parents get some really DIFFICULT spyware shit installed like an IE hijacker... something that's new enough for the antivirus software not to be able to find.

and they call me from 2000 miles away and want me to help them on the phone through something that would take me probably 2 HOURS MYSELF sitting there in person.

Actualyl no no no no

The worst are projects where ppl are just throwing ideas at you after youu've already started working and some people expect you to code AND keep track of all these lame ass buzzwords and shit that are going on now

Can you put a user contributed blog with videos and bla bla bla

I don't FUCKING KNOW! The word BLOG and the idea itself is just retarded. Call it what it is.. a message board.

Everyone tries to tweak some technology that's been there and give it some stupid ass name then all these non IT people are throwing these retarded names at you asking you stuff that you know.. but you're confused because it's all in a different nomenclature.

... GaH!!

Here's another example of what I have to deal with. Remember .. I do web sites.. THis one company got another third party company to handle their emails and they gave me access to set them up with new email addresses. I'm a WEB GUY and I hate doing systems/email stuff but sometimes I end up doing it anyways... so look at this email I get from someone working for my client:

Quote:

"Brian,

I am getting a different cell phone so that I can have access to my emails . . . are there specific parameters I need to know or a certain phone I have to use? I have Sprint service. I don’t want to get a new phone and then not be able to access my emails.

Thanks for your help

WTF is this bullshit? Now I'm supposed to be an expert on phones? jesus fucking christ!

For the person who drew the parallel to digging holes and saying that an IT guy would be like your friends all asking you to dig holes for them.. that's not entirely accurate..

Being an IT guy is more like being a guy that digs holes... and someone asks you to dig a simple hole for them and you do it, but it turns out the guy really wanted a tunnel that goes t4 miles underground to a lake and provides and irrigation system, but then gets mad at you when you just dug the fucker a hole because that's what he asked you for.. and then gets pissed when you tell hiim you need another contractors to do the irrigation system because... "YOU're the HOLE DIGGER... AREN't YOU SUPPOSED TO KNOW ALL THIS SHIT???"

I too am the "IT Guy" at work. Except I'm the only one, so I  do all the sysadmin work, help desk, in house programming, everything relating to our internet presence, etc. Though I quit doing work on friends' computers unless they provide a home cooked meal.

Luckily most problems at work are simple enough that they can be fixed within minutes, usually eliciting a response like "Wow, that seemed easy, how'd you do that?" Usually I'll explain, but once I see their eyes start to glaze over and lose attention, I just tell them "Because I'm the fucking man, that's why I was hired. :igor:"

I personally don't like it and its not all that commonplace in the professional film/tv post world, IMO you'd be better off learning FCP or Avid.

What's FCP got over Premiere?

The reason I'm getting into premiere is just because I'm already learning shit like Flash and After Effects... figure I might as well stick with the same company.

There really isn't a huge difference between the two, if you already have it and it works well for you then I wouldn't worry about it but like I said FCP/Avid is more pro standard.

This page has a general comparison between the two:

Premiere is easier for me to pirate

Plus I'm just getting into editing so I doubt I'll have enough skills for a while to really notice the difference..

Thanks for the advice though.. I may bug you later

I'm not really looking for a job in it... just doing some stuff for fun right now for a few buddies that produce drum n bass... and then we'll just see where it leads.

I hear that giving up on hardcore computing, I have been programming since I was 7 years old in BASIC and TI Calculator Basic, at 10 I was memory managing in C++.

Anymore at age 20 all I want to do is program some neat crap in java, use my computer to look up information, and find a new career choice.
