The curse of being the "IT Guy"

Another reason the IT industry sucks.. when you have a specific job title like "programmer", or "Database analyist", or "network engineer"... these titles mean nothing and people are just going to call you..... "the IT guy".
Which means of course.. you can fix/do anything IT related...
Even when people call you on the phone and ask you to help them configure software you NEVER use, have any reason to use, or have ever seen... and they expect you know know it.... and when you tell them.. Uhh.. I've never used [insert obscure software title here] so I can't talk you through it on the phone ... they just sit there quiet on the end for a while before telling you how much they really really... need it set up.
.. like when we said we didn't know how to do it.. we were lying and waiting for them to REALLY REALLY need it to say.. "OH... since you REALLY need it.. sure... NOWWW I know how to do it .. you should have told me BEFORE that you needed it... let me snap my magic fucking fingers and just pull the knowledge out of the air then..."
Cuz I'm the IT MUTHA FUCKIN WIZARD

Just be glad that people assume you are so smart that you'd know the answer to any tech question they could throw your way.
I dig holes for a living. Everyone assumes I am some poorly educated dimwit who got into construction because he wasn't smart enough to do anything else.
Assumptions...they're almost always wrong.

I dig holes for a living.
Imagine that everybody you know expects you to come dig holes for them whenever they need a hole dug, for free, because that is what you do for a living and they know you. It would get pretty old after a while.
BrAiN, I don't know if you read nntp news or not, but if so, give ASR (alt.sysadmin.recovery) a try. I think you will appreciate the humor of the group.

I like that people ask me if I'm a geek because my abilities surpass those required to send e-mail and do google search.
Were ancient Egyptian scribes geeks because they knew how to translate a variety of thoughts and words into a set of useful, decipherable hieroglyphics?

I'm totally burning out on computer shit... I can do stuff maybe like graphics or video and I'd be happy... but no more hardcore shit like programming and systems.
1 year...
I'm giving myself 1 MORE YEAR at this and I'm switching careers. PERIOD. I told myself when I finally saved up enough $ and got my credit up enough I was going to turn my back on all this puter shit and open a bar.
Fuck "whenever"... time to set a date. If I haven't put in an effort on this by March 4th 2009.. someone BAN me from the shroomery.

I hand them a book and tell them to learn how to fix it for themselves.

I'm not an IT guy but I know enough to stumble through most problems and even that has people calling me all the time to help with computer problems. I usually try to help and that's probably why they keep calling me.
On a similar note, my favorite cliche used most often by IT types is "there is no magic bullet to fix network problems."

You're in IT and have never heard that? I find that surprising. Over the past 4-5 years, I've heard it used at least 50 times by over a dozen IT/network types.

Oh I can completely understand how frustrating it must get. I'm sure if people could figure out how to get me to dig their holes over the phone they'd be calling me up all the time. And rest assured that plenty of people take advantage of my services as much as they think they can at times. Sometimes the best friends are the ones who never ask for a favor!

BTW BrAiN....why is my computer making that noise when I do that thing with that one program after I reboot on a Thursday morning?
...sheesh, a real friend would be more helpful...

Happens to me as well, for both cars and computers "Can you take a look at my car after looking at my computer?"
I love when the in-laws call my wife, and I am supposed to diagnose some problem of theirs while communicating through my wife who is on the phone....

I used to have a great "IT guy" at my last job. Used to burn me copies of 80s's Guns n Roses concerts & random movies. I think the only reason he did that was because I hardly ever asked him for shit. He used to go apeshit on certain people in the office if he thought they were stupid and it used to crack my ass up. Dude was like the McGyver with a computer though. I think it would be a good job to have, no?
