new pet rat
    #8093882 - 03/02/08 02:28 PM (15 years, 11 months ago)

I bought a new pet rat yesterday and was just wondering if anyone was familiar with what they like as far as human contact goes? I let her walk around my shoulders and in my pockets and hoods, but is there anything they like more specifically? I want to make her as happy and comfortable as possible.

when i had rats (i kept rats as pets for many years) mine always like to be pet and loved on. i used to kiss them too, but i also gave them regular baths (they didn't like that so much, but didn't care enough to put up a fight, they were very well behaved). i found they also like to be talked to.

rats make such awesome pets, i miss having one.

My friend has 4 rats. They kick ass. They're really intelligent so they need toys and shit. You should probably get another rat btw, they're very social and can get lonely.

I love how you can just grab 'em and play with them. Rats are totally down with humans.

most critters like attention from people once they get
accustomed to them, I used to carry one around with me at
school, when he was small he would mostly stay in my pocket,
later it was on my shoulder or head

i brought mine to school with me a few times. she always liked to just chill with me, in my hoodie pocket, on my shoulder, sometimes on my head. i'd let her out of her cage to run around, but she never went anywhere that i couldn't see her and always came back when i called for her. they really do need lots of attention, it seems to keep them happy.

I was doing some research on them after I brought her home and realized I should have got another one or maybe more! I love her so much and can't wait to get the next one! When she was on my shoulder I was singing to some music I had on and she seemed to like it lol

I had a ferret that was like that, he was just laid back, I
took him to resturants and he'd just lay in the booth

i kept rats with my sister for a few years. Just like with any animal the more love you show them the more affectionate they are to you. Mine loved riding my shoulders and head and would sleep in my lap while i played video games.

Just keep up the cage maintenance and pay attention to them everyday and you'll get a lot of enjoyment out of them.

you should definitely get at least one more so that they can talk and play with each other when you're not around.

The woman at the pet store was telling me as well that they're most active at night and since I'm sleeping she has no one. I love having a female because apparently they are more crazy - but good crazy. She was actually really active at the store when I saw her, but now she seems to hide at the bottom of the cage a lot. Should she stop hiding once she gets used to her new home?

i bought a rat once and kept it in my friends cage (which had a rat in it as well) until i could find my own good priced cage. i'm pretty sure the rat i bought had a disease or something, because both the rats died within 3 days. i may get another and give it another shot.

i've had rather amazing experiences with dwarf hamsters myself. i had one little guy... mr tingles... for 2.5 years!!! he lived so long!! needless to say, twas a sad day when he passed:tombstone:

It sounds really strange to me that anyone would keep rats as pets, but reading all the success stories in here makes me realize they must be some awesome animals.

Gotta research into this :yesnod:

I have a four year old and he wasn't home when I bought her, but he came back this afternoon and he loves her too. He likes to let her crawl on him too, but she tickles his neck and he gets too excited so I can't leave him alone with her. He likes to put her in his pocket though.

Does anyone know how to train a rat? If I'm correct you can teach them tricks. Or maybe any methods you've tried and have worked.

i've never really tried to train any of the rats i've had. i'm sure you could train them though, to an extent. you can probably find something online about it.
