Short Cut Keys!

There is something awesome about learning a shortcut key to something you didnt know before. I love using shortcut keys.
Now for as long as I have been using XP, when I right click on an icon and see a shortcut tab. In that tab there is a spot that says "Shortcut Key: NONE". I click in the box and press a button, 'M' for example, and then it says "Shortcut Key: Ctrl + Alt + M". Yet when I press ctrl+alt+M I get nothing.
I have tried this for years, every time I do a fresh install basically I try to set shortcut keys on my icons. I can never do it. I just did a fresh install of XP Pro on my laptop, tried to set a shortcut key and got nothing.
Has anybody here been able to set these? How the hell do you do it?
Thx

I just noticed that it doesn't work if you don't hit "Apply" instead of "Ok"
Hit Apply! Works for me.
-------------------- A human being is part of a whole, called by us, the "Universe", a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings, as something separated from the rest, a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circles of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty.

I have never tried to use them, but I'm having the same problem as you.

Figured it out. Ok, someone else figured it out but I figured out how to use Google.
Quote:
Don't know exactly what you did, but creating a shortcut within the Office folder, or dragging/sending a shortcut from this folder to the desktop with or without an assigned shortcut key combination won't work. As Microsoft notes: "Shortcut keys work only for shortcuts on the desktop or in the Start menu hierarchy".
Maybe you did it right, but try the routine of creating a shortcut directly on the desktop. Right-click on the desktop and click on New => Shortcut. Complete the wizard and when the shortcut is created, right-click on it and click Properties. Type T in the Shortcut Key box. Try it now.
This worked perfectly.

I like the built in shortcut keys
start button + e = windows explorer start button + d = show desktop start button + l = lock screen
and there are more I think

Also, I stumbled across this if that doesn't work for you. It's a simple program that runs in the system tray. You have to configure it accordingly, of course, but it's small (only 36kb). It'd be nice if there was a built-in option to run it as a service.. though, you could make it start up automatically with some registry modifications if need be.
