Is it worthwhile to upgrade to Vista?
    #8093206 - 03/02/08 10:13 AM (16 years, 2 months ago)

I'm reformatting - my other thread in this forum explains that situation. I am going to be reinstalling Windows XP Home edition, which is what I started with, but most of the drivers I'm finding for my laptop model are for Vista or so it seems.

I've heard nothing but bad things about Vista, that it's buggy and not as much of a pain in the ass.

Should I just get Vista, and which version of that should I get if I do?

Just about every person on the internet that I have read, dislikes vista. Just about every person I have met in real life, likes vista.

I just got a laptop and reformatted the disk after 20 min of playing with vista. I just wasnt that impressed, or in the mood to try it.

After a service pack comes out for it, then I will probably give it a shot. What version should you get? Of course ultimate. (Your not going to buy it are you?)

Nah, I'm using torrents. I just finished DL'ing XP Home Edition, which was what I originally had.

I just need to get a burning program for my CD-RW drive so I can burn the ISO file to reformat with, and also so I can burn my modem drivers and stuff to a disc so that when I reformat I can use the net to DL the rest of the drivers I'll need.

Vista is more of a resource hog and is tougher to use for simple things.

I would avoid it, at least for now...remember Windows Me?

I would agree that vista is a resource hog, but as far as interface goes, I love it. I just got a new laptop (AMD TL-60 2gb ram) and swore I thought I would be reformatting with XP, but for what I use it for, I really can't complain. So I'll be sticking with it.

get deepburner for some quick burning.

vista? i actually like it. i've been using it on and off for about a year. i like how it looks, i like a lot of features, i disabled uac (or whatever it's called) and i didn't pay for it. people say it sucks for gaming, and something about drm but i don't really play games and i've had no problems with all my pirated shit so i don't really know what they're talking about. and it runs smoothly on my laptop. it rarely crashes and it looks pretty. i get all updates and stuff and i have the ultimate version. i really like it but i also have xp and ubuntu installed so i have options.

I agree Vista has a nice look and appears to be stable and somewhat idiot proof for the casual to average user.

I still must say that for power users XP is still the order of the day. I really feel like Vista is trying too hard to be user friendly, but sadly this is end-user, optimal system configuraion friendly.

What I'm saying is that once you get your system just how you like it, you'll likely have no problems, but there are irritating things like Vista not allowing you to surf the internet on an unsecured wireless network/hot spot without going through a couple of less than obvious steps to make it happen.

I have had horrible software compatibility problems. Plan on using any adobe cs2 products or old macromedia products such as flash or dreamweaver8 forget it. Hell of problems just coping movies. I like the interface it took a while to get used. I think the overall benefits don't outweigh the problems it causes though. As others have said it is a major resource hog also. I have 3gb of ram and an amd 5600+ dual core processor and I really think my old xp system with a gb of ram and an amd 3600 single core ran better.

I'd equate using vista to jerking off with a brillo pad so, if that's your thing then, by all means, knock yourself out.

And if vista forecast doesn't look good .. is this a flag indicating the possible demise of Microsoft ?

It could happen rather quickly .. too bad we dont still have 0S/2 or some significant other in the race as well .. Maybe the next step will be for the UNIX clones ..

Quote:

Breakup

The collaboration between IBM and Microsoft unravelled in 1990, between the releases of Windows 3.0 and OS/2 1.3. Initially, at least publicly, Microsoft continued to insist the future belonged to OS/2. Steve Ballmer of Microsoft even took to calling OS/2 "Windows Plus."

Vista might be stable around the time Microshaft starts pushing its next version of crapware on people.

Microsoft doesn't die overnight, sadly.

They probably will repeat what they did after ME failed.
Then they polished up the only half decent OS they had (win2000) and sold it as XP.

So now they probably are building a 64bit XP version+eyecandy, call it Windows FG (for Fucking Great) and pretend that Vista never happened.

i hear you koppie .. i hear you ,

if there was a close second in the running then MS might have a immediate crisis tho

i dont think Linux really rates as a serious competitor to MS yet .. i guess if you lump all the linux's together they begin to gain real significance but thats sort of poetic since they are seperate platforms as far as competition is concerned .

When Intel hit the design hiccup with the Prescott P$ line and had to ditch its flow chart for 10GHz chips (which would be here about now i guess if not earlier) AMD got a better relative performance rating for a few years but IBM kept on going and switched into the Dual/Quatro lines ..

Microsoft is in real danger of doing the same thing , and giving its competitors a chance to catch market share ..

Perhaps Google might be looking at it .. when i think about the current software landscape it seems to me that
It may be Driver sets that are near the middle of the scene ..

The Driver impass in real life is a trauma at times .. people simply want stuff to work .. Vista already has a bad rap for Driver support .

Yet my money is on Google for the mainstream competition to Microsoft going forward .

MSoft has a great rep for eliminating competition - possible partially because they recognized their own significant weakness of the Windows graphic platform over its non graphical foundation .
Possibly this is also why MS is so hesitant to release its source code , because they percieve it as a weakness .

Google has taken them on head to head over several issues lately as we all know .. if they can get a OS together then Google has all the creds to be a bona fide competitor for microsoft .

As far as the quickness of the momentum of change .. thats often share market driven .. and if the Microsoft ship looks like sinking stock holders will pocket their winnings and be on the next proverbial boat to China .
In a real event with real competition MS could suffer a sharemarket loss that could send them into a tail spin within a couple of months .. Sure they can come back but if they havent got the development cycle in place to come back and Win then they would begin to suffer . And while the other team is going forward all this time , MS would begin to look very very shaky indeed.

I have vista on a sony vaoi laptop from last summer

don't get it.. it's worthless and annoying.,.. which means it will be what most ppl are using in about a year

*sigh*

IIS 6.0 was fine then they had to release 7.0 on vista and do exactly the same shit they did with windows... NOT add anything new except for some security that drives you nuts and then take the interface you know and love for the past 6 yeas and REARRANGE everything so it takes you months to figure it out and then call this "rearrangement" an "upgrade"

I love Vista, FWIW.

I used to love linux but I grew up tired of it, vista is the perfect middle ground for me.

In some aspects it's even better than kubuntu (even tho in most is just the same, and in some it's worse).
