My Pasta Cakes * 1
    #8093032 - 03/02/08 09:06 AM (16 years, 30 days ago)

I decided to try a fun little experiment growing with some of my favorite food!

This is my favorite brand and type of pasta, delicious and also pretty darn good for you, not like the regular refined flour pasta.

I chose Rotini since it has a TON of surface area

ingredients:  it was while reading these one day that I thought up this bit of fun

I cooked the pasta like one normally does for food.  I have found that it tends to dry out a bit in the PC so a little bit of overcooking might be helpful.  I loaded the jars:

I found that these cakes shrink significantly while being colonized, so I really packed the jars as much as possible.  They don't compact and limit growth like if you did the same with BRF.  A dry verm layer was added to the top.

I PCed them for around a half hour.  Originally I tried upwards of 45min to an hour but found that long tends to dry the pasta out a bit.  I let them cool and inoculated with an LC just like BRF cakes.

that's a pic with some elbows instead of rotini

start of growth

couple days later

Because of the large amount of shrinkage in the jars, I kept them upside down to prevent the verm layer from falling down the sides.

after a couple weeks

I birthed them and dunked for 24 hours.  Rolled in verm just like BRF and put them in the FC.  One thing I noticed is that they continue growing for a few days longer in the FC, sending out rhizos in all directions off the cake making them look pretty funny.  Probably because there's so much food in there for them.  After a couple more weeks in the FC:

not too bad for a fun little experiment

And the best part... you get to eat the leftovers!

thats a little sausage and shiitake sauce that I made from scratch and boiled down all day yesterday, very tasty!

cheers!

omg... mad respect. Hows the potency with multigrain pastas? I'm going to guess its pretty, since its "multigrain" and not regular white pasta. good job dude.

Thats a neat idea. What kind of yield did you get?

NICE how fast were the colonization times?

I think I'm gonna check how much bulk pasta is today, haha, that is sweet! Multi-grain pasta for the win!

where did the macaroni come from?

o_O

those start of growth pics aren't rotini are they?

surely rotini can't retain much water.. seems like your cakes are likely to lack water resevoirs

where are the second flush fruits?
i'd be curious as to what the PH of those rotini cakes are
seems like the mycelium would grow around the pasta leaving raw pasta open to the air after picking the first fruits

the only way i see this working is if you grind the pasta up, and you might aswell get BRF at that

He cooked the pasta first... Cooked pasta can get really soggy so i assume they can hold a decent amount of water.

Stop experimenting half way through your first grow. Grow it to maturity, watch it, learn from it. Do this a few times then experiment with different ideas and figure out what works best for you.

The pasta came from Stop and Shop, just regular Barilla Plus.  That fruiting picture was taken this morning, so once I pick I will probably re-dunk for more moisture.  I can let you guys know the yield and potency once they're all picked and dried.  I have some under a fan right now so it shouldn't be long.

The first growth pictures are from a single jar of elbows I tried first to see if it was even worth continuing with 9 other half pints.

The water content was whatever the pasta held from it's boil and dunk.  Plus a roll in verm with lots of spraying.

I will keep you guys updated as to second flush, yield etc etc

Yrat
don't let my criticism offend you
you know that's how we do it at the shroomery

i'm sorry but i just can't see these cakes being practical as an alternative
perhaps you're victim to your own skill at making mushroom substrate, remember in science that others have to be able to reproduce your experiment

now this is the real question
can you make that pasta colonize quicker than rye and use it as spawn?

They look tasty before the roll in verm

Maybe if you didnt roll them, after they are done fruiting you could eat the cake and save the boomers for desert

At any rate, I think this looks like a nice experiment, using "People Food" like this should limit the contams you get compared to using rye and wbs don't you think? I am honestly willing to pay more for a less likely chance of contams before birthing. I am personally tired of being as sterile as possible, but still fall victim to bacteria and mold. Thanks for your post Yrat, 5 4 u!:mushroom2:

no offense taken, i was just a bit confused lol.

i agree that they are probably not practical as a competitive alternative to BRF.  however, they clearly work to an extent.  i believe they are very prone to moisture loss and drying out, but i have been thinking of maybe trying a pasta/verm mix, filling in all those spaces with fine-grade verm.  this would be able to hold tons more water.

as for the spawn question, this has also crossed my mind.  i think it is a very likely possibility that i have yet to try.

Five shrooms!
I have been wondering about this, but have not had the balls to try it.
