No...your eating contaminants. + They don't contain actives as much as the fruitbodies do.

Pick out as much of the rye seed as possible. If you eat some.. don't worry about it. If it's contaminated, don't eat it. I really didn't understand why you would be eating contaminates..??

The sclerotia grow within the rye, and you can easily separate them with your fingers. Sclerotia is my favorite. Eat a golf ball sized handfull of sclerotia and you'll be happy. RR

This question comes up occasionally. The sclerotia grows like a potato in the ground, swelling and displacing the seed (mostly). Often a few grains will get caught in a fold or crevice in a lumpy sclerotia as it continues to grow, but primarily the inside of the sclerotia is grain-free. If it troubles you to eat the occasional grain, you should be able to break up the larger ones along the deep creases to remove trapped grain, or just eat the small smooth ones that are easier to clean and give the large ones to friends.

Not really sure about this, but it doesn't seem to be a grow question. Am I wrong, if not than why is this question allowed. Not griping or contacting a moderator, just wondering for future reference when one of my posts get backlash and mean responses. Then closed

they must be cased to pin. The sclerotia is denser than mycelium and i believe it contains more active material the just plain mycelium.

I was curious about something tangentially related- is the potency different between sclerotia and mushrooms of the same species(mexicana, tampanesis, atlantis)? I know that in a multispore grow, potency is going to vary greatly between fruits and everything, but are the dosing guidelines equivalent for Mexicana fruitbodies and sclerotia, and, if not, is there any advantage to fruiting them besides curiosity?

potency does not vari greatly between fruits. I believe that mushrooms are stronger pound for pound but sclerotia is stronger than mycelium pound for pound. This is what I believe but I could be wrong. Sclerotia is not just thick mycelium, I do believe that the active stuff does concentrate here like it does in the mushroms also. I havent read up or grown the stuff in a dozen years but I do have experience with it. It gives me heart burn to eat it. And stores just fine. This stuff is at least 10 years old.
