Troubles with DNS'ing

Alright, so. I've decided to host a domain on my own computer, and am having trouble understanding the DNS'ing.
I've got my domain routed to my own IP and such, and I can connect to it via this fancy little httpd, so everything is set up fine, but my IP still DNS's to my ISP's name or my actual computer name. How would I go about setting it up to say my domain instead?

Change the DNS to the DNS provided by the company you registered the domain with

You said you have it routed to your IP already? Most registrars provide tools to allow you to manage DNS, but most ISP's do not allow reverse DNS.
It really depends on the ISP, but you can call them and see if they will do it -- you have no control its whoever owns the block of IP's, and not just 1.

I assume you've setup a nameserver on your computer? and opened the appropriate ports etc.
Then enter your ip address into the registrars nameserver thing et viola.
Took me a lot of tweaking to get the conf files right for bind, but now that I got it working, it works fine

Yeah, everything is set up fine. I can type in the domain name and it connects and such (using a pretty simple program called eDNS; just a note for those who are looking to set up their own servers).. but if I do a lookup on the IP, say, ipchicken.com, it still shows my actual hostname rather than my domain name, which is what I want it to show.
You mentioned something about reverse DNS'ing, which sounds like what I need to do, so I'll have a look into that and perhaps contact my ISP if necessary.
Appreciate the replies, folks.
I'll post an update if I ever manage to get it working, and how I did if/when I do.

Yeah man, reverse DNS is what you want...so when you visit websites their logs will say your domain, when you get on IRC, it will show your domain, etc.
Most big name ISP's will NOT allow this. (rr, cox, bh, aol, vz, and a shitload of others)
The reason is that when you buy a domain, you own that domain and can forward it anywhere you please (or no where) with your DNS servers, or any servers you please.
The same is true for IP addresses, except you do not own it. You are leasing it from your ISP, and usually unless you own /lease a large block of IP's from them(usually for a corporate account) they wont do anything for you.
You can give them a call, and ask if its possible for them to set thier DNS servers PTR records to your domain.com for your static IP.
But they will probably say "huh?" and after a few days worth of ticket escalation you will be told "no."

I sent my ISP an e-mail in regards to this.. they replied and had no clue what I was talking about, and I really spelled it out for them in what I was trying to do.
So, for future reference, since I'll be moving soon, what ISPs -do- allow reverse DNS'ing? Can you name a few off hand?
