Wax on; Wax off

In the movie 'Karate Kid', the young student is told to wax all of the master's cars using a specific motion. The kid grudgingly does it, but feel he is being used as cheap labor when he wanted to train in karate.

The master then throws a few punches at the kid who deftly blocks them with a wax on; wax off motion.

What in your life did you see as meaningless activity at the time, that later turned out to be important training?

"Showing my work" in algebra class.   At the time, it seemed utterly stupid to have to write out step-by-step how I solved problems (especially since I tended to solve via intuitive jumps).  If I did not NEED to use a step-by-step process in order to arrive at the correct answer, why should I be forced to endure the tedium?

However, the discipline and logic that I learned through those hours of homework have proved invaluable in other classes AND in my profession.  Who knew?!
