Computer freezes and reboots when trying to copy files

A while ago I had some trouble with this older desktop of mine (refer here for more info on such; it might (or might not) have something to do with this problem). I've got it set up to multi-boot with XP, Slackware and FreeBSD. When I try to load XP, it claims ntldr is missing and fails to boot, so naturally I try to stick ntldr on there manually. I booted up into FreeBSD, mounted the floppy drive and moved another copy of ntldr to the XP partition. The first few times I tried this, it froze mid-copy, but eventually I was able to get it on there where it's supposed to be. The error still comes up, though. I've tried doing a fresh install of XP, but about 3 seconds after it gets to the point saying something along the lines of "You have another copy of Windows XP on this partition. Press R to repair.." etc, and before I have a chance to do anything, it reboots.
Slackware sometimes freezes unexpectedly during bootup. It has also frozen before when I was trying to copy files from the floppy drive.
FreeBSD hasn't frozen on me since my original attempts to copy ntldr from the floppy. (FreeBSD for the win).
But anyway, my question here is: Does anyone know how the hell I could get Windows XP up and running again?

No can do. The boot process on a PC is very restrictive due to space limitations. The entire boot code has to fit into less than 300 bytes. About all that can be done with this little space is to load a section of disk and execute it. Windows loads a section of disk called ntldr. The ntldr (nt loader) continues to load the rest of windows. However, the code that loads ntldr doesn't know anything about file systems, etc. Because of this, the location of ntldr is fixed. To correct your problem, you need to boot into the recovery console on your windows install media. Once in the recovery console type 'fixboot' to correctly load/place the ntldr. Do NOT run 'fixmbr' or you will lose your lilo/grub or whatever boot manager is present.

Yeah.. I would if I could. Like I said, the thing reboots just as it gets to that screen, so I really don't know what to do.

Hi. I would start by finding your "Last Known Good Configuration". LKGC should bring your operating system (XP) back to its original functionality before you installed new hardware and began experiencing problems... LKGC might only work like that if you re-booted your machine only once after getting error messages and all that. I am kind of fuzzy with XP right now, I just got certified with XP last week and it was only three days of lectures and studying but still passed the exam somehow.
You might be able to access LKGC by shutting your machine down, starting it back up, and tapping on the F8 button while the machine is booting and that should put XP into Safe Mode.
That is a basic idea of where I would start. I could be wrong.
A second option would be to shut down your machine, boot it up again, then re-install the XP software. Then XP should recognize the new hardware and what-not that you recently put in your machine... or maybe shut the machine down, put the XP CD in, then restart your machine and install XP that way. I can not remember right now which of those two re-installation methods would work better for your scenario.

Yeah, that would have been the first thing I would have done if I was able to. The error came up -right- after I'd tell lilo to load XP, so getting into safe-mode wasn't really an option in this case.
I decided to set that harddrive up as a slave in this other desktop I have and formatted it, since there really wasn't anything on there of great importance anyway.
I set it back up in the original desktop I'm having trouble with after formatting, but the rebooting after it copies all the files necessary to run the installation still occurs. I thought perhaps I had a faulty XP disk, so I stuck it in one of my laptops, but it runs as it's supposed to, so I'm pretty sure it's the desktop itself. Anyone have any idea what the hell is wrong with the desktop?

Right, so, I unplugged the "slave" drive, which contains BSD and Slack, tried again with reinstalling XP and ended up getting a Blue screen of Death;

So, the reason it's shorting out is because it's attempting to write to read-only memory (0x000000BE).. some quick googling suggests that this usually occurs when new hardware is added, which, there hasn't been any new hardware added to this in.. years. So, I really don't know what's going on, here. Can anyone shed some light?

Pop your ram out an reinsert, or try another compatible stick if u can. I had a PC that wouldn't install xp...it kept missing files trying to copy. I thought it was the power supply, ended up reinserting ram and everything was fine. Ram can cause weird problems with copying files and during installations.

Seriously try that I bet it will fix it, after reading more it sounds like the same problem. I burned like 5 or 6 copys of windows thinking it was my disc too.

I dunno man
What sticks out for me is "An attempt was made to Write to Read-Only memory" -Your permissions are fuxxord, might have happened when you were changing things in the partions
When is the last time you did Windows Updates on that machine?
And have you tried working with it in Safe Mode yet?

I'm pretty sure it has something to do with the BIOS. I've unplugged anything that isn't essential for the computer to run, blew it all out with an air hose, put fresh RAM sticks in it and everything, and it still happens.
I'll just dick around with the BIOS for a while and see if I figure out the problem. At the moment, it's set up as default, aside from the boot sequence.
I'll post an update if I ever get it working. har.
