What the Hell is Wrong With This Thing?
    #8081213 - 02/28/08 11:54 AM (16 years, 2 months ago)

Okay, this happened awhile ago and I stashed my computer away and used a friend's computer that I have here, until that piece of shit got so unbearable that I decided to hook mine up again and see if I could get lucky. It started up fine until it went to restart, didn't start, and I fought with it for half the day until I've finally managed to get it start up right this time... I could disassemble and reassemble the insides of this fucking thing in my sleep... well, except for taking the harddrive out of its little shelf, because I can't get to the screws on the other side...

So, here's the deal. I click the start button, and it goes to start up normally, the processor starts whizzing. But then, what happens, right about the time the BIOS would load, it doesn't. I guess you could say that it "hangs". Anyways, normally the hard drive makes this sound, a sweet amazing sound I regret to say I have all but forgotten, but now it makes a grunt and then nothing more happens, but the processor and the fan keep running (I've also started it without the hard drive plugged in and it doesn't make any of those sounds, which brought me to realize the BIOS is stored on the hard drive). Occasionally, when turning it on and shutting it off, the screen would turn on, but all that would show up is a flashing line at the top of the screen.

Less frequently, and more fortunately, the BIOS would load. It would say that the last time, the system hung because of an improper CPU frequency. I've changed this between a few options, which I'll get more in depth on later, but it still would have this problem.

I know the hard drive itself has no issues because when I have gotten Windows to load, everything works fine, Windows loads properly, all my files are kosher, etc. I can only suspect that the processor works fine, because I experience absolutely no issues when Windows is running, and the first time I got it running (which was yesterday), it stayed running for almost an entire day. I used to have a lot of problems, say about six months ago (until I reinstalled Windows, which was before it decided it just didn't want to boot, which was just a couple months ago), and I used to think this was due to overheating.

I'll assure you this can't be the cause any more, because not only have I thoroughly cleaned everything inside this computer several times now (unscrewed the motherboard, taken the processor out of its cage, taken apart exhaust fans, etc.), I keep a side panel off the computer and keep a box fan right agansit it on high speed.

Okay, so to the CPU speed, which the BIOS (Award BIOS something or other) says is the problem... Oh, also, I took off the ribbon cable between the hard drive and the motherboard and am now using the one from my friend's computer - still had the problem afterwards, although I have had a little more success restarting it now). The CPU speed, I think it was called, I could set as Manual, like 2400 mhz, or 3200mz, something like that. Anyways, that isn't important because that only changed the CPU frequency or my ability to change it myself.

Now, that frequency number, it was a list from 100/30 to 166/33, or something. I can't remember the exact number after the /, but that's not really important 'cause it was from 100, 101, 102, etc. all the way up to 166. There was another number that came into play, but I couldn't even change it, even if it was on Manual, 24x or something. I'd go to the BIOS to get very exact information, but I'm NOT voluntarily restarting this computer now.

Oh, also, the three numbers I tried were 100, 133, and 166. 100 was the default number it was on, and also when I put it on 2400mhz setting, 133 when I put it on 3200mhz, and 166 is a number that my girlfriend found to try by searching my motherboard, which is an ASUS P4S8X-X. The processor is an Intel Celeron 2.40 GHz, and I have 512 mb of RAM (something I need to fix soon ) I don't have the cd that came with the motherboard or any of that stuff because it came up missing after I moved last....

What's the fucking deal; why can I get through to Windows occasionally and it will work fine for hours and hours? I'm going to do more searching on this and email the guy in Norway that put this computer with me (he's a network administrator for an oil shipping company :headbang:) but I thought I'd see if any of ye Shroomerites would care to tackle this mystery. :sherlock:

Thanks!

bios is stored on your on-board flash memory, not your hard drive.

Celeron 2.4

frequency:    2400 MHz
l2 cache:    128 KiB
fsb:          400 MT/s
multiplier:  24x
voltage:      1.475/1.525 V
type:        Socket 478

put the multiplier on 24x and the frequency/clock speed to 100.. that will get you 2400.  you dont want to try to overclock a celeron.

if that doesn't work, it sounds like a power supply issue.. either up the voltage in the bios to the proc/ram or get a new power supply.. try to upgrade your bios whenever you can get it to boot.. go to the asus website.

i dont like celerons.  pieces of shit if you ask me.

i've had an amd xp 3200+ for almost four years and it's a fuckin' soldier... built it myself though.

thinking about getting a new computer soon so if you're in the market..

Either your power supply is bad (most likely) or you have a bad stick of RAM (least likely).

The fact that you can get to the BIOS (which isn't stored on your hard drive...) means your processor and motherboard are working. It may just be a setting in your BIOS, try resetting the BIOS to defaults.

It's probably a bad (and cheap) power supply.

If it turns on, its normally the ram.

Failing that then the hdd. Best thing to do is plug the components that you think are faulty into a working computer and use trial and error to determine what the faulty component is.

Thanks for the help everyone. It has stayed running for at least a day. It restarted a little while ago and it took a few times before it started again. The power supply is a cheap one (I had to buy a new one when I came back from Norway a few years ago), but I'll have to replace it soon because I'm moving to Romania in a couple of weeks, so that should be taken care of soon.

When I get a chance I'll take the RAM from the other computer and hook it up, and see if the problem persists, just to know for sure that it isn't that.

Also, does the fact that it will stay running with no real problem for like a day suggest anything? That is what confuses me about all of this...

Power supply...if it's cheap it probably has some bad capacitors.
