My list of great movie directors.
    #8076636 - 02/27/08 12:30 PM (13 years, 7 months ago)

Here is a list containing directors worth checking out. Most of these, I've seen a lot of their movies and truly believe they are great. Others I haven't seen a lot, or only one or two movies, but they've been recommended extensively by other people and basically are just here incase my DVDAF list dies. They are still worth checking out, though.

Going by movie director is much easier to find movies to watch or recommend, IMO.

Robert Bresson
Jean Vigo
Jean Renoir
David Lynch
Werner Herzog
Billy Wilder
Charlie Chaplin
Buster Keaton
Harold Lloyd
Elia Kazan
Luis Buñuel
Federico Fellini
Mikio Naruse
Andrei Tarkovsky
Jean-Luc Godard
John Waters
D.W. Griffith
Orson Welles
Dario Argento
Akira Kurosawa
Ingmar Bergman
Yasujiro Ozu
Michelangelo Antonioni
F.W. Murnau
Kenji Mizoguchi (Only saw one movie of his, and it was one of the best I've ever seen)
Stanley Kubrick
Alejandro Jodorowsky

To a lesser extent:
Alfred Hitchcock (good, but not as interesting)
Spike Lee (good, but sometimes pretty damn lame)
Woody Allen (good, but can get annoying)
Martin Scorcese (good, but not excellent)
Wes Anderson (okay)
Jim Jarmusch (so-so)
John Ford (good, but doesn't make my favorite kind of movies)

Directors I don't like/hate, but people like:
Todd Solondz:

Happiness was almost good, but I felt that sometimes he lingered on things too much. And I don't really like his opinions. Other movies didn't really interest me.

Peter Greenway:

I simply don't like his style. At all.

Nicholas Roeg:

I hate his style even more. Most of his movies are ugly IMO and too fractured to be good. Walkabout was okay.

Jan Svankmajer:

Awesome animator, but I never really liked his movies aside from Conspirators of Pleasure. Which was just okay.

Quentin Tarantino:

His movies feel too forced to me. Resevoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction are fine, but I like them less and less everytime I see them.

Robert Altman:

I just don't like his movies. His infamous overlapping dialogue almost always gives me headaches. But Shortcuts was awesome.

David Fincher:

His movies just don't appeal to me

Tim Burton:

Aside from Pee Wee's Big Adventure, his other movies just never impressed me.

Again, this is all just my opinion. I spend a lot of time watching movies, and just thought I'd share since I love them so much. And there are always "recommend me movie" topics going around.

tarantinos a genius. love resevoir dogs, pulp fiction, jackie brown, kill bill. not too into death proof, though it was a good watch once or twice.

i'm a little sad hitchcock wasn't on the first list!

im a big cohen brothers fan..

when it comes to Tim Burton, I have a soft spot for nightmare before christmas, despite the way it's had this revival in the past 5 years and become this cliche piece of hot topic clothing... but anyways, edward scissor hands and big fish are two of my favorite movies... charlie and the chocolate factory was terrible...

One of the worst movies I have ever seen. Hilarious to me when the art fags think they have to stick up for it because Burton directed it. Johnny Depp was annoying, the musical numbers were terrible, the sets were boring, and the movie itself was almost too boring for me to sit through. Ed Wood is another good Burton film however

sitting in the theater, i wasn't disappointed, I was literally mad because they managed to ruin a CLASSIC movie. Gene Wilder is a tough act to follow but really thats no excuse for how awful that movie was

How about Maya Deren? What are your feelings on Gilliam?

What about Michael Bay?

I only saw Shades of the Afternoon by Maya, and I liked it. But I really need to see more of her things.

Terry Gilliam is pretty cool, but not my favorite. I liked Time Bandits and The Adventures of Baron Munchausen was cool. The Monty Python's are okay, but I just can't love them like everyone else does. I would recommend him though. Same with Sammo Hung, who I forgot.

Michael Bay is pretty bland in my opinion. The only movie I really like of his was Falling Down, but I don't really care to see it again.

Joel Schumacher directed that movie.

And I was kidding about Michael Bay.

I do like The Rock though. It's kickass.

meshes of the afternoon is THE classic maya, but I actually prefer "At Land", check that one out if you get the chance!

I do like your list very much, but I've really liked all I've seen from Jarmusch, just Dead Man and Coffee & Cigarettes
