crohn's disease and tripping
    #807273 - 08/09/02 02:58 PM (14 years, 4 months ago)

a friend of mine never would never eat mushrooms because he has crohn's disease and he thought the shroom digestion might give him stomach complications. recently he decided to eat a half 1/8 and was fine. it was okay the first time, but who knows what will happen to him if he takes them again or at a higher dose. i personally don't think that mushrooms fuck up your stomach that much.. i never have any problems, but does anyone here know someone or is someone who eats mushrooms and has crohn's disease? is it un/safe?

I've found that with most people mushrooms "fucking up your stomach" is a big myth.

Crohn's disease affects many the small intestine the part of the intestine known as the ileum, it can affect any part of the digestive system from the mouth all the way down to the anal sphincter (says what?).

So assuming he's a normal text book case, his (real) stomach vomitting wise (not the stomach people complain about when they gotta take nasty shits) would be the only thing affected if he's so inclined to believe he's going to get sick and vomit from eating shrooms.

Anyways, if he's taken it once and did not have an inflamatory episode of his small intenstine, (assuming he's a normal text book case) then he should be fine another time or two.

Psilocybin and Psilocin seem to cause a vomitting reaction in only a few people, and most I'll venture to guess is Psychosomatic and has no real organic cause, as for causing bad shits and things, it is not the result of psilocybin or psilocin or any other chemical, it is prolly due to allergy *(if you will) to mushrooms in general, so if he can eat any other normal mushrooms then he should have no problem with these.

Obviously if he is not a textbook case, then this information maybe slightly false, but of course if his disease affects his Mouth, Pharnyx Esophogus, Stomach, Large Intestine, Duodenum, or Anus then perhaps different, but i'll guess it most likely isn't and he should take the same precautions as he does with any other food product. Otherwise no complications and no reason for complications can be found.

I think mushrooms are fairly gentle on your stomach. I believe most sickeness comes from the rapid onset of the drug and not mushies upsetting there stomach.

Only thing i could think of is that it is kinda hard to digest dehydrated stuff. Mix the shrooms with some OJ or try em fresh. Im no doctor but i dont think he should have a problem.

IMO,one reason people have digestive problems is not properly chewing their food.(Not trying to belittle sufferers of Crohn's or anything else). And judging by many posts around here,a lot of people dislike the taste of shrooms. So they bolt 'em down, and wind up with a tummy full of shroom chunks.

But I agree that whatever nausea is experienced is from the alkaloids themselves.

Can your friend handle aspirin? Aspirin comes around 150 on the toxic chemicals list while psilocybin comes at around 642. I've never experienced the slightest nausea with mushrooms. Powder them in a coffee mill and either drink with juice or gelcap. No nausea whatsoever.

That factoid is completely irrelvant to a Crohn's sufferer...
(tho' I'm sure aspirin is not recommended)

What are you talking about? He asked whether shrooms would have a negative effect on his digestive system. The fact that they are far less toxic than aspirin gives him some idea of how likely this is.

Do you understand?

Sorry-I don't think you get it.Crohn's has nothing to do with "toxicity".Many people with it have bad problems with things like dairy products or wheat. The LD50 or some other kind of "toxicity scale" IS irrelevant.

im with moe.

i used to eat shrooms like they were candy....no chasers or anything....

but eventually my stomach started to reject them. so everytime i would start to trip on them....like 15 mins before my peak i would hurl it all out! and then i would start to level off and come down......my trips would abort! i think only twice out of the 10 times since i developed this nasty habit i was able to keep it down. although i had discomfort until the last 3 hrs of the trip (well after the peak). it sucked cause my trip was consumed by pleasing my belly!

the last time i tripped i grinded that shit into a powder and chased it with OJ. i had very little sickness and my hardest physical trip (couldn't stand or walk for 30mins even tho I NEEDED to smoke some herb) and my mental fuck was the bizarrest i had had with shrooms.

but i don't think i'll ever do them again.

First thing you need to know is crohns disease is a hell of a lot more complicated than having problems with dairy products. Introducing toxic substances into a digestive tract already massively irritated and inflamed is highly likely to cause problems. Sorry, but the fact that shrooms are non-toxic is highly relevant.

I would say most definitely consume them with vitamin C, which for general users of the mushroom definitely does calm the stomach.

Also, as suggested earlier consuming in powdered form would be optimal, there are very few people in this world who chew their food correctly - that is the number of chews required for a food to be optimal (there's that word again) for digestion is quite large. Read a book on the subject and you will be suprised how long you have to sit there chewing to do it right. I don't do it because it takes too damn long and I would have sore jaws if I did do it anyway. However, considering the risk that is being taken here (even if it a small risk) if you do choose to consume fresh or whole in general you must chew the hell out of it, which is disgusting of course. Much easier to load into gelcaps (which contrary to some people's opinion do digest fast) and consume.

I too am no doctor but I think most mushroom related pain in the stomach is actually coming from the liver isn't it?
