Partially colonized jars
    #8071111 - 02/26/08 01:06 AM (15 years, 11 months ago)

Is there a way to force full colonization of partially colonized (70-90%) jars? Or is there a way to prevent the inevitable mold attacks on the uncolonized portions, once the cakes are birthed?

Are they BRF jars? I assume that your jars have stalled, with no growth for at least a week. If not, just let them go. Force is not the way to succeed in this endeavor.

If you are that impatient, birth them and then scrape off all but the colonized portions. Then treat as you would normally birthed cakes. But I'd give them time...

what engineer said. use a sterilized spoon and remove the uncolonized portions.

you can also try flipping your jars upside down. This has always helped my BRF jars finish colonizing. Dont ask why but it has worked for me.

Good call KillerPicklez. Often, I have had to turn BRF jars upside down to finish the colonisation process. In my experience, it is generally the bottom of the jar that takes the longest to colonise. this is because the colonisation process uses oxygen and gives off carbon dioxide. because CO2 is heavier than O2, the oxygen is higher up in the jar and by flipping them over, you give the mycelial network near the bottom of the jar the oxygen it needs to continue colonisation. If flipping doesn't work, you can try premature birthing as Engineer says. my advice would also depend on how long the jars have been colonising for and how long the colonisation has stalled for.

The uncolonized portions are mostly vertical slabs, not top/bottom. As if the spores couldn't reach around the full perimeter.

if a cake stalls out and flipping it for gas exchange doesn't work for me I just toss it. If it isn't fully colonized I don't want it in my FC to potently contaminate other cakes.
