The solar panels: If you're not using much electricity during the day, and your panels are getting more energy than your house is using, it will off-set your electricity bill. Another good idea would be to install these things I saw on like...HGTV or something. They kill electricity to appliances from the outlet when you turn off the appliance. This is good because, even though your tv is not playing, it's still using electricity (that little red light + other stuff). So this would kill all electricity usage without "permission" and would definitely save you money on your electricity bill when solar panels are incorporated.
My 2 cents. Hopefully something like this will pan out to be your $30 a month

The last solar array I built was eight square meters, put out 1500 watts peak, and cost around $35,000 for the terrestrial grade silicon cells. The last expensive array I worked on put out over 2500 watts, used space grade gallium cells, and cost around $1.2 million. Most solar arrays have around a twenty year life.

Assuming solar cells and not thermal transfer, you are correct.

They are noisy... something that most people don't think about until after installing. They are also expensive and unless you have a large swept area (i.e. big), they don't produce much power.

Yeah save energy. Turn shit off when it's not in use.
Wait a couple of years for Solar panels to increase in efficiency and decrease in price. It's like DVD players, but on a little larger time scale.
Good luck with whatever you do.

I've looked at Renewable energy too. But currently i'll wait. I look at it from a return on investment point of view. How much would the system cost you? What are the potential returns in the future? Could those returns beat investing the same amount of money in a mutual fund designed to mimic the S&P 500 index?
I think there's a lot of hype with RE Engergy right now and I think oil goes higher when the truth gets revealed. There seems to be a very logical reason why oil became the energy source of choice. I do like the concept of EV's though and think that will be operational in the future.

First thing to do is to replace all your 60 watt incandescent bulbs with 15 watt fluorescent bulbs that put out the light of a 60 watt bulb at 1/4 the energy and last a whole lot longer too. Cheapest energy saving thing you can do and easy as screwing in a light bulb.

I love solar just not solar photovoltaic, using a lens to concentrate the HEAT from the sun to boil water that can a) heat your home and b) make stream to run a turbine or stream engine to make electricity is way more efficient.
think big, think diffent
