I Got A Gun

Ruger 10/22 Carbine.
I don't know anything about guns and I've only shot one once when I was a child. I decided to get one because guns have always been such unfamiliar territory to me.
Got a cleaning kit, disassembled the gun, gave it an initial cleaning, and learned about how it works this morning.
Is there anything else I should know, besides the obvious? I would like to go out shooting some cans in the desert today.

I have always been weary to have a gun around. Just the small amount of paranoia in the back of my head that says "What if I get tripping to hard and freak out and a gun seems like the best defense against anything."

My first gun is going to be an AK-47. I'm pretty familiar with firearms though.

IF I wanted an automatic AK-47, and I don't, I would just buy the fully automatic trigger disassembly. They're legal, but there is some ridiculous distance it has to be from your weapon. It's unenforceable. Or I could just get someone to machine and fix a disabled WW2 automatic weapon.

.22 is prone to ricochet, pointing it at the dirt is definitely a bad idea, the better option is to treat it and all fire arms as if they're loaded and ready to fire and to never load the rifle until you are ready to fire it

never point the thing at another person, even if unloaded. keep safety on when not in use, keep unloaded when not in use.. you know, all that smart shit so you never have to look like a reckless asshole.
GL guns are fun..
for your next, go for something a little higher caliber

its a nice thought in the back of many americans' mind that they could stand up to their government. it's written in our constitution. we couldnt, no fucking way not with these crazy new weapons technologies that our government has, but it's a nice thought. it worked in the past, and it was sort of, y'know, the way our country was created.
as soon as i get enough money im gonna get a gun and become proficient in its use. Well, 'cause you gotta be able to ward off the zombie apocalypse when it comes.

i think you might have misunderstood me. I had the shotgun first (as you only have to be 18 to buy one), and sold it when i turned 21 for the Glock 19.
I love the glock, it's perfect size, and the ammo isn't too expensive (~$11/50rd)

agreed. guns are cool for like skeet shooting and if your an actual hunter, but imo, having a gun your house for protection is a bad idea. guns are so much power in such a small form that i refuse to have one, expect for paintball guns.

NIDcommand - I got the Glock for home protection. I live in the not-the-best neighborhood in Norfolk, VA - so it makes me feel secure at night. It is quite nice to have around. It sits on my bedside table, in plain view, fully loaded.
Also - the glocks don't have external safety's, so if the trigger is pulled - it will shoot.
People get all worked up about the safety concerns regarding such a situation - but in reality, if NOBODY PULLS THE TRIGGER then it won't shoot. Simple.

ahh, yea glocks are nice too, i have a revolver for home protection. I know glocks are known to be very dependable, but you never know and when you life is on the line i want to know my gun is going to fire. And there will never be a jam, if it doesn't fire the fist time pull the trigger again and BOOM. High stress situations are never good for trying to un-jam a gun. the one thing that worries me about owning a gun for home use is the possibility over over penetration, i live with my family so if(god forbid) i ever needed to use it i don't want my bullet going threw the bad guy and into a loved one. know what i mean......people under estate the power of a 9mm at close range

What revolver? When I turn 21 I plan to ask my father for his .38 special to shoot for recreation, but I'll get either a .45 1911, .40, or 9mm for self defense.

NID i know what you're sayin about the jamming - but in reality it doesn't happen that often, and when it does - it's usually due to poor form, not any fault of the weapon itself.
I just like the size, shape, and feel of a semi-auto, as opposed to the revolver. My dad has a .38 special aswell, he loves it - just not for me. I got 15+1 capacity, and i LOVE it when i'm at the range

If you're using decent ammo and you clean your pistols properly they won't jam. I just really like the .38 special. Why do you think the police used it for so long? It's fucking solid.

I hadn't even heard of that caliber. Apparently it packs more of a punch than the .44 magnum too. Do you need protection from bears or something? God damn. I think I would like to be shooting at things a little bit farther away than the .454 would allow, especially for self defense.

i use ear plugs all the time, but if i wasn't it would be LOUD. and i went with the .454 because IF someone ever was in my house i want to make sure that if i have to use my gun it will stop them, .22's are way to small and 9mm are nice i own a 9mm as well(beretta). But like i said before i think the revolver is a better choice for home use then a simi on the off chance there was a jam or some other problem.

I'd almost be afraid to shoot it. The noise it makes after being fired is probably enough to scare most people away anyway. Just use blanks!

1. Always treat the gun as it were loaded with safety off, even if you KNOW it isn't.
2. Always keep chamber unloaded, safety on, and finger off trigger until ready to fire.
3. Make sure you have sufficient backstop to stop the bullets, they travel long distances. .22 can travel up to 1-1.5 miles before hitting the ground.
be safe.

man, i have seen two guns in my life, and they were both pallet guns. i'm not saying that they aren't around, or that they aren't in the wrong hands, i'm just saying that they are a hell of a lot less common here than in america.
and aiyobro not everyone has mafia contacts.

That is a flat out lie. Sure, it's easier for criminals to acquire guns if they're legal, but if they're smart they wouldn't be using those guns to commit crimes in the first place. Making guns illegal would only keep guns out of the hands of people who use them for self defense and recreation.

no. it makes people like me more able to protect ourselves from the outlaws.
people dont realize that guns are there. the black market isnt going to shut down and stop all sales once guns are illegal. all it will do is keep guns out of law abiding citizen's reach.
there is still gun crime in EVERY single country where guns are outlawed.

I still feel strongly that if guns were illegal the ability to obtain a gun (blackmarket or other wise) would be much more difficult
look at the fatality rates per year of gun shot wounds in the us compared to other countries where guns are illegal the difference is vast

yeah, of course there is. just not as much here.

look at the fatality rates per year of gun shot wounds in the us compared to other countries where guns are illegal the difference is vast
they just need to make it harder to get a gun, thats all. not ban them.
just remember, if you want to make something REALLY popular, ban it. bans of any material has not worked anywhere. regulation is the only way.
and yeah gun fatalities are higher here, but the amount of people who successfully protected themselves and their families is far above any other country with no guns.

dig.
the only thing this article will prove to me is that more people need to learn how to properly operate and own a gun, and then get one.
the founding fathers didnt make arms the second most important bill in the bill of rights for no reason.

yes maybe tighter regulation may be better than banning however, I really dont thinking banning guns is going to make them more popular I sure know that I wouldn't feel more motivated to get a gun if it was made illegal
"but the amount of people who successfully protected themselves and their families is far above any other country with no guns"
they wouldn't need those guns if they weren't available in the first place. Also, is there any evidence towards this because I'm having a rough time seeing a large number of incidences where a gun actually saved an innocent person from a criminal

banning half of the guns here has not made people want guns more.
i think america is just gun crazy and that is what it comes down to.

think about it
um look at the US, having guns legal makes it ten fold easier for 'outlaws' to obtain guns your point?
my point is look at the police, everyday theres one being arrested for murder, rape, robbery, shooting other cops, etc... allowing citizens to have guns allows us to defend ourselves against the criminals, criminals will get them regardless, and even without them they'll still kill, just look at the statistics in england and scotland
did banning guns in austrailia eliminate murders? has robbery and other violent crimes dropped?

sure, fewer people are being shot but frankly, it's less painful than bleeding to death from a stab wound, even if you dont die from injuries sustained from a knife the rehabilitation and reconstruction takes years

im all for tighter regulation, so that way mentally unstable people and people with records of violent crime cannot ever get one(legally)
you may not feel more inclined to mike, however like me, you are more than likely an upstanding person and would go out of your way to help someone else, instead of harm them. not everyone is like us. not everyone goes about life in legal, nor moral ways. some people opt for crime over legit work. and guess what, banning guns will not stop them from entering the country, nor from being produced. its just like the current drug war, the harder they push, the harder people try to bring the product to the people. until crime is extinct, guns will always have a market, and where there is a market, there is a profit, and where there is a profit, you can bet your sweet ass that people will risk everything to make that profit.
its a nice thought you have mike, and if that thought were true, then i would be all for destruction of all weapons. but the fact is, there will always be guns in the hands of other people, and as long as that holds true, i will have guns as well. legally or not.
im not about to go digging for it, but yes, there are a large number of people every year who successfully protect themselves from violent crime here in the US with guns. women being the largest growing group. women are training with and buying guns more now than ever to protect themselves and there are plenty of success stories to prove it. you just rarely hear of it because it doesnt make as good of a news story as a young woman raped and murdered.

good points and articles however, the ability of a person to inflict violence on number of people is greatly reduced when they arnt able to obtain guns
"allowing citizens to have guns allows us to defend ourselves against the criminals"
but seriously though - how often is the case when a citizen actually uses their gun for self protection?

lifting regulations will do more, Kennesaw Ga has a law that every home MUST own a gun, guess what, they're crime statistics have remained the lowest in the US for 20 years... seems that guns may indeed deter crime

my father would be dead at the hands of two carjackers in miami, if it were not for him carrying a pistol.
it happens alot more often then you think. for one you dont hear about it because youre in OZ, two, like i said before, our media would rather report about death and violence than someone successfully protecting themselves.

think about all the bombings by the IRA over the years, think of how many are happening all over the world today do you really believe killing in large numbers is isolated to just guns?

already posted a couple articles on it, theres several from my area where people fought back, killed their assailants and lived to tell the story, with all the school shootings, mall shootings and such if everyone else was armed dont you think someone would have gotten a shot off?

I am not going to read the other posts (too many) and I will just answer the rest of them.
So this is chambered in .22 long rifle?
Good starter rifle, great for shooting at cans and hunting rabbits or squirrels. Also bullets are ridiculously cheap and you can shoot it all day for very little. It is the second smallest round that exists, besides a .17 (bumblebee or HMR, they really dont make .17 bumblebee anymore unless its the same thing as HMR, but never shot one, .17 are pointless and the bullets are more expensive)
This gun should have very very very little kick at all. If you can't handle it you are the biggest pussy on the planet.
If you live out in the boonies by all means go out and shoot cans. Try to avoid doing so unless this is the case, these bullets can still travel up to a mile.
The gun will likely need to be cleaned A LOT after a shooting session if you are anything like me (shoot a lot if I get the opportunity) it is a pain in the ass but is worth the effort (you should always clean every gun after you use it)

just remember, if you want to make something REALLY popular, ban it. bans of any material has not worked anywhere. regulation is the only way.
I think it should be all but illegal to own a hand gun without a background check.
Shotguns and rifles are a different story.

the brady bill made sure background checks are done unless you're a CCW holder in which case you go throug the state and federal background check, you're finger prints are on file with the FBI and you're issued a lovely card that prevents you waiting the 5 minutes and spending the extra $5 private sales are a different story

That must be a new law 'cause I bought a .38 several years back for $50 at a pawn shop. Walked in and walked out w/a hand gun.

Hey thanks for the advice everyone..
I went out shooting today and had a great time. Got about 100 rounds out at various cans and bottles. Barely any kick at all, and pretty fun to shoot. I can definitely see myself getting a more powerful gun in the future.
Only problem I had was with the gun jamming every now and then. A casing would occasionally stay in the chamber and prevent a new bullet from being loaded.

thats a ruger for ya...you want a good and fun more powerful gun, i recommend and sks, bought me a yugoslavian one in original military configuration with the grenade launcher and bayonet for 130 at a gun show. Once you get the cosmoline off they are reliable and fun as fuck to shoot, plus you can buy military surplus ammo for cheap.

O.K. a little late(o.k. a few years). Hope you have an FFL.

I'd get the world war 2 automatic, I think I've always wanted to fire a ppsh, or an mg42. but really what also would be awesome would be firing the newer dillon minigun, but you'd kill someone for sure. if you fired it in the desert it'd still go through so much shit it'd probably go through a mountain come out the other side continue to travel then hit somebody
it's pretty powerful
