flowhood problem?

I just put this flowhood together....seems to be working well except for one area where the air is comming out faster than the rest of the filter...maybe got a little beat up in shipping. Will this affect the performance of the filter? If so is there a way to fix it? If you are wondering, I do have a variable speed controller hooked up the the fan. thanks Stony

It needs laminar flow to work properly.
You didn't give enough information to even begin to diagnose what's wrong. I'll need size of filter, rating, cfm of motor @ 1" wc, size of plenum, and orientation of blower to filter. RR

It is a 24"x24"x12" rated at 1200cfm...don't know what size the squirrel cage fan is but I got it out of an old furnace in a house and it is mounted on top. I already started fucking with the filter and it hasn't become any worse or better. I plan on making a tent for it.....would it still clean all the air in the tent then so I could work agar or anything else? If none of this works can you recommend a good site to get a new filter matching these dimensions? thanks much stony

looks like a large portion of the filter is F'd up. you're probably out of luck with that filter. If you can feel the difference in air velocity with your hand, you've got serious problems and YES, it will mess up your work. If the air velocity is different, it means you've got a hole or loss of filter integrity in some form or another. None of the air coming through the filter can be presumed to be sterile.

have to disagree with the previous post. that looks like a good set up. just need a flow hood of some kind to direct the air flow.

there are plenty of "hoods" without walls for "directing" air. (BTW, walls are only to protect from outside drafts, not to direct airflow. That's what laminar flow is for.)
And I didn't say the setup was wrong, just that the filter probably won't work. If the filter itself isn't damaged, then everything should be fine. The cheapest way to tell is to allow it to run for 30-45 minutes and then set up an agar plate in front of that spot for about an hour. seal and incubate, as long as NOTHING grows out, you're probably just fine to use the hood as is.

I think I am going to end up throwing this filter out and buying a new one....guess I will have to use a glove box for now. stony

if it were me i would build some kind of plastic wall extension(all 4 sides) on that thing that way i was only getting the air flow from the hepa... so i could work inside those walls.....
the filter will work... and she is thick.... give her a try thats the only way you will know!!

It's not doing it's job though if there is rushing air comming out of an area on the surface of the filter.

thats only the outside aluminum thats bent... the inside is what matters... even if it is fucked i would still try it... not worth wasting a filter
i really have to give it to you... that looks great..

Stony is right about not wasting a filter. Be sure to test it before dumping it. If it's just bent aluminum, you're still ok to use it, but if the filter was damaged, you're pretty much screwed (as big as the damaged area appears to be).
A filter about that size will run you $150-200 new and possibly cheaper if bought from a second-hand supply (ebay, science-suppliers of overstock, etc.). However, the second choice is dubious in nature, be careful.
