Question on size requirements of cakes in FC
    #8066746 - 02/24/08 10:41 PM (15 years, 11 months ago)

How much space (inches) would you guys say is needed between cakes and between the cakes and the walls in the FC ?

I'm trying to put 8 cakes into a 19 qt FC, and they would fit, but it'd only be about 1-2 inches between each one and i dunno if that's too small. Not really sure what to do. Can't really go bigger, so many people come over to my place all the time that I can't have one out in the open.

I have a 12"x36"x48" little cubbyhole with a door that I'm trying to put the FC in. It's actually a great little spot because the back end of it is open to the air in a way (to provide fresh air) but you can't see it unless you were really looking. I could also easily fit a light in there.

Anyway... yeah.

it's fine..

they are going to grow whether or not they have enough space.. it should be fine..

only thing you might have to worry about is providing enough FAE for them in such a small space..

you should really have about 3 foot in between each cake.....u know....for those reallllllly big ones! hahah, im an optimist if you couldnt tell.

no, actually 8 in a 19qt will be ok. its not like its going to stunt the growth or anything like fish in an aquarium. its just a mess when they drop spores all over eachother cuz theyre so close. just make sure you keep your humidity up and provide plenty of fae, and theyll be jussssssssssssssssst fine! GL bro. can we get a pic?

Hehe sorry I didn't mean to imply I already grew them but looking back i did word that way. I'm getting everything prepared for my first grow which will start in a few days. The freakin store I bought the spores from is yanking me around regarding shipping (was supposed to be here last week!!!) but I called and they finally told me they actually shipped them out on friday, so it should get here tuesday-wednesday

and dont worry! i love taking pictures so i will definitely keep a photo log of the whole process.

edit2:

I also just spent like 2 hour scrubbing my bathroom is lysol/70% isopropanol. i'm tempted to eat off of my toilet. it sparkles like a queen's ass :tongue2: i'll do another  spraydown of everything before i inoculate, but it really needed to be cleaned b/c of dust/random mold and stuff. the whole bathroom looks great now, no visible dust/mold anywhere (not that there was -that- much mold to begin with).

why do my simple ideas always turn into paragraphs on this forum lol. i just keep writing...

one of the vendors sells them here on shroomery, theyre cheap. and worth it. the inoculation is THE most crucial part when doing cakes cuz the need to be sterile is SUPREME....

is that worded funny to anyone else?

nah it got the point across

well since i got your attention, do i remove the foil, inoculate, and put foil back on? is that the procedure?

or do i inoculate by stabbing through the foil? and if that's the case, i need to sterilize the foil with some alcohol beforehand correct?

hahahaha. man if you have the RR video you should watch it about 5 more times. hehehe. you need to take the foil off. you SHOULD innoc in a glove box. and you need to flame and alcohol sterilze after each jar. personally, i flame after each jar, and alcohol after every hole. but you dont have to after each hole. but keep your foil and they go right back on like a cap. or you can get some micropore tape and tape over all the holes after inoculation and that way they get a little air.

You do not need to use a glove box for the inoculation part of this process. Flame your needle between each jar to avoid cross contamination. Inoculate thru one layer of your foil and cover with tyvek. The extra 1/2 inch layer of vermiculite on top of your Brf mix is a contamination barrier. Done! Works for me every time. Good luck.

To answer your original question ......

Maximize whatever FC you have .... in other words, put as many cakes in there as you can.

You have done the work, built the FC, the cakes, etc .... so why not get the most from you efforts.?

I haven't done cakes in a while (before I knew about 'dunk and roll' and perlite, etc...) and I found that the more cakes in the FC, the better the humidity.

Good luck, MAN.
