The second set, are those active? I found some of those this morning but didn't think they were any good because they didn't bruise blue. And the stems seemed really "chalky" The last set also, are they active?

You didn't keep any of those did you?? Specifically, the first one? If so, you should dry it!

I'm pretty sure that is Chlorophyllum rhacodes- a fairly rare mushroom. The much more common, Cypress-loving relative which is often misidentified as C. rhacodes is C. brunneum, but that is not what you have there.

I know a mycologist who studies the Lepiotoid clade of mushrooms, and would likely be interested in this mushroom if you still have it.

AWESOME!

It should be dried whole. Either put it in front of a fan, or under a hot light.

Don't stick it in the oven, that kills the cells.

I would never have guessed that C. rachodes is rare. It certainly isn't here in the Denver area. Going through the collections in the herbarium it appears that they're about 50-50 C. rachodes and C. brunneum.

Of course, rare doesn't mean the same thing in mycology that most people use it for in other things.

Happy mushrooming!

Hmmm, I'll ask Else more specifically if she meant rare for California, or rare in general.

None the less, I've only ever found C. brunneum and C. molybdites, but never C. rhacodes
In fact, I've never even seen a true C. rhacodes in person (or should I say, in mushroom?). :ohwell:

I was hoping immage #8 in the first post would be Phylloporus rhodoxanthus, it's not.
