shaking/flipping jars

after 11 days my full pint BRF/verm jars are starting to look 80% colonized from the outside, no contams so far, and really nice looking fibrous growth. Now, I've heard that when a jar is nearing completion it can help it finish colonizing faster if you invert it (something about getting more fresh air to the bottom of the jar. Is this a good idea or a bad one, and about what stage in the colonization process should it be done (if you do it at all)?

this is mostly just a bump cuz I want to know too. I flip mine upside down at about 65%. I'd like to know if that really does any good though. I think maybe it helps get some co2 out since co2 is very heavy compared to oxygen. not sure though.
Flipping them definitely didn't hurt though. So don't worry about doing it. Not sure matter of factly how much it helps though.

dont shake a PF style jar, you'll break the vermiculite barrier that's keeping the contams at bay

Sorry if it seems like I'm taking over this thread. I have never shaken them (though theres an ansewr for you prayformojo) but how about flipping them? co2 is heavier so it will release some, helping it to go faster? I'm pretty damn sure thats right but please let us both know for sure if you know for sure.

Don't flip jars. As prisoner said, it screws up the verm filter. CO2 doesn't need to 'drain' out by flipping the jar upside down. That's a bit of disinformation that once typed refuses to die. The reason is the heat produced by the mycelium causes circulation that takes care of the gas exchange. RR

I guess I have kind of taken over this thread with all the questions. Sorry prayformojo but I'm sure you're still benefiting!
Thanks RR. I got 1 out of 12 contaminated so I reckon flipping doesnt do too much damage but hopefully in the future I'll get no contamination.

glad i asked. though I'm not sure how much good my dry verm is doing right now anyway as it seems to be more or less overrun by mycelium (and yes, I did follow the tek and make sure to wipe the rim and use dry verm). My intuition has told me that opening the jars to add more verm, whether or not I PC the new verm, is a bad idea and just inviting massive contamination, is this correct?
