so im growing my first penis envy cakes, from the hawks eye. now, these are the first cakes that i've had that had over 2-3 aborts. there are quite a few on one of the cakes im growing now. but im nervous because the other aborts ive had just get pale and stop growing, but on the aborts on my PE cakes the caps are turning very very dark, almost black in some spots. normal? also, in the stems it's not straight and pretty like my B+ cakes, its all disformed and messed up looking. not unhealthy, just ugly.
so are the cakes healthy?
pics up tomorrow

i too had many aborts from PE. i also ordered from hawkseye. actually the whole process has been subpar. colonization was slow, fruiting was slow, and tons of aborts.

Sometimes you get lot's of abort, sometimes not even one. It's said that there are a few strains that produce more than others (such as Treasure Coast), but in the end, I guess it's again just a question of "personal" genetics and growing circumstances. Guess you didn't change any of your growing parameters, so it's the genetics or the outrun of nutrients and water.
Concerning the dark caps, I can tell you, that this is absolutely normal.
It's one of he characteristics of an abort to get an almost black cap!

are you supposed to just leave aborts on the cake until it's fully harvested? or do you go ahead and pull them off once you realize they're pretty much dead? and is it safe to eat them?

PE is ODD... it may produce a few shrooms per flush on a small casing or cake, but the shrooms it grows are dense and thick.
It is like the strain compensates... by aborting what it can't support... while giving you VERY LARGE and HEAVY shrooms to compensate for your loss.
When all is said and done... PE gives you what you'd get from any other strain... but from a cake you may get a few BIG DENSE SHROOMS and many small aborts.
PE is odd... but it all seems to even out in the end. Don't give up yet. It sounds like you are having a typical multispore PE experience. Ralph or Sporeworks would have given you similar multispore results on the same cakes with the same strain.
Be sure to water the hell out of your cake next flush! Don't forget to dunk and roll!

~Are aborts as common with Treasure Coast if growing on bulk substrate? I have a spore print, from a member, of Treasure Coast....Should I take the time and learn to isolate a substrain and then make an LC (two things I' am wanting to learn)? The idea behind this being that isolating the substrain of treasure coast would produce more uniform growth and much less chance of aborts. Right? lol...shows what I know, but I am having so, so much fun beginning my research into mycology. lol. I love you guys. ~Pixie~
