premiere vs final cut vs after effects?

Years ago I tinkered with Premeire, trying to get my feet wet in video editing. I used to have a pipe dream of being a director, a desire which has lately been rekindled.
One thing I never really understood was the differences between some software.
I've only played with Premiere... importing/looping some stuff I did in flash so I could dump it to dvd and also importing a little stop motion clay animation from my Sony Digicam.
I never messed with After Effects though. What are the major differences between PREMIERE and AFTER EFFECTS? What can each product do, that the other can't? Will I be able to get the hang of video editing with just one other the other or are both really neede?
Also, how do they compare to Final Cut Pro? that's another program I've never messed with.

Just to preface, I work with these 3 programs on a daily basis for my job as a multi-media producer.
One is for editing and one is for effects. Premiere/Final Cut allows for precise edits. I think of it as the last step in a creation. Everything else, for me anyway, is done outside of it.
I create lower-third title cards, motion graphics, end credits, animation, animated background etc, in After Effects and bring them into Premiere/Final cut and edit everything together with one of those two programs.
Final Cut is considered the professional's standard tool, but you CAN really do anything that Final Cut can do, in Premiere. The only upside to FInal Cut is if you get it with Final Cut Studio, you get Motion and Color and a few other programs which make it even more awesomer.
If you can, get a chance to work in Color. It's the most advanced piece of post-production software I've ever worked with, other than After Effects.
Also, learning After Effects is the hardest, but most rewarding experiences a multi-media producer can take up.

I knew photoshop for a long period of time like the back of my hand.. then .. enter Illustrator and Flash....
Those two were a pain to sort of switch gears... but now that I know them... It's pretty sweet. Premiere was easy after knowing flash and photoshop... felt like the two of them just put together.
I take it After Effects has a similar curve.

If you understood Flash on a basic level, meaning setting keypoints and setting up easing on tweens and making everything look smooth and GOOD, then getting the basics of After Effects down shouldn't be a problem. THe hardest part of AE is learning what each damn filter and effect does. Some of the names for the effects are beyond misleading...
I emphasized good because one of the most important things I've learned is to make things look good, not spectacular or realistic etc. You can take all the time in the world to make something look spectacular, but the majority of people can only spot "good".
Plus, the majority of my AE work is less than a minute and I work on 5-6 projects a week, so I have to work fast.

Hell... fucking around with ungodly amounts of filters the fun part about learning. just light up or grab a beer and just go nuts.
I just ordered a firewire card so I can start ripped shit from my Sony digi 8 to my pc (I tried USB but couldn'y get audio... works fine on mac but my mac is slow as dirt).. gonna start messing around with a little mix of flash, AE, Premeire with shit from the cam and even my cell phone if I can get all the file formats to play nice.
I'll upload my progress

Cool. I'll upload my own personal project I'm working on when I'm finished too. That could be awhile, I'm creating and editing a 12minuite music video.

I'm doing it all through my own stuff. Pictures I've taken, b-roll I've shot, motion graphics I've created and whatever else, except for the music, which is a track of the psychedelic ambient artist, Shulman.

I got a budy who produces shit.. I wanna help him out and get a vid for him:
http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=2663787
It's drum and bass so I got a lotta ideas..like cutting to the reflection of a car's side view mirror vibrating in a post-rain soak during the bass drops and shit... so you see like a bunch of water and buildings getting scrambled and warped.. and kinda looped for the beat
