Just about ready to go ahead and case 15 quart jars of rye today... i am going to be using jiffy mix and i have like 3 bags... i plan on going with a half inch of casing material on each tray for casing...
i need to sterilize the jiffy mix first except this is twice the amount i used last grow and i do not have the materials to nuke multiple times... so i am going to use the oven since i have some extra baking pans...
i have searched the search feature and get lots of stuff to read but its too conflicting... does anyone know a basic heating and timing setting for sterilizing jiffy mix in an oven??
i have read 200 degrees for two hours. i have read 350 degrees for 1 hour ect.. ect.. ect.. is there a basic way of doing this or standard way? if not can anyone help me out thanks...

Don't sterilize your casing material. All you need to do is kill any trich or other fungi spores that are present. That's why we only pasteurize casings. You actually want a small amount of bacteria in your casing, as it helps to promote a better flush. I would recommend pasteurizing in quart jars.
It's very easy to use your PC to pasteurize in quart jars. Load your field capacity casing material or compost/manure into quart jars and place in the PC. Fill with COLD water 1/2 to 2/3 of the way up the jars. Place the jars in your PC or other large covered pot with COLD water Cover and turn on the stove. Do not place the weight on your pc. Leave the vent open. Allow the water to come to a boil where you can feel steam escaping from the vent hole. Allow steam to escape for five minutes, but no longer. Shut off the stove and leave the PC alone for 1/2 an hour. Then repeat the process...bring it back up to a boil. Allow steam to escape for five minutes, but no longer. Shut off the stove and leave the PC alone for 2 hours. At that time, you can remove the jars and they'll be just right. I've used this tek for years, and the interior of the jars will reach 150F for an hour, but never exceed 170F. RR Pasteruization Tek
Oven is a breeding ground for bacteria/contamination. Microwave is a breeding ground for bacteria/contamination. Air is a poor conductor of heat. I've done this tek and it's worked wonders for me anyways.

See. I've seen agar do it with success but I wouldn't do it as Microwaves are filled with microbial Contamination spores How big is the tray? You don't have any drinking glasses anywhere do you? That'll work just as good.

just pour that jiffy mix into a big pot and warm it up to 140 for a 20 mins. Let it cool, and drain off the excess water and through that super wet mix on the substrate.
It is okay if it is too wet, spread it evenly and cover it for 24 hours. Open it up the next day and loosen it up with a fork
