Grandfather had heart failure.

It's getting close to his time. He's in his 80's. He's still alive, but not by much it sounds.
It's strange because at this point I keep expecting to hear that he's dead but NOT YET. I don't know. It's hard for me to deal with it because I remember him as such a hale and healthy man. Now he's melting away in his own flesh because of old age. Guess it happens.
Anyway, shouldn't be too long now.

Sorry to hear that. From experience, I know it's harder to wait to finally hear the news.

Yeah, I don't know...I was wondering...do I go and see him BEFORE he croaks, to soak up the memory of him in his last moments of "vitality," or do I just wait until after he finally passes to attend the funeral? I can't decide what would be better.

Probably go see him. It'll be pleasant just to have YOU there. What I mean by that, is how people get concerned and think they have to have all kinds of things to say and give to someone who's passing on. But just having the person's support by them simply sitting with you is enough. At least that's what I think.
I deeply regret not seeing my brother in his final months.

I wasn't there for any of my grandparents' deaths, which is something I really, really regret.

That sucks. Sorry. My g'pa went to the hospital a few times toward the end of his life. Never knew if it would be that "last visit". He was a stubborn bastard.
One night he fell and broke his arm. We met the ambulance at his house in a rural area.
The paramedics took him to the hospital, got him all set up for an overnight stay. He must have fallen hard enough to tear open an aneurism right above his heart. He must have been put into a bed, hooked up to monitors, etc. He was probably just sleepy and semi-conscious and then he died.
It was actually close to his perfect death: He stayed on his farm until the night he died, and he died quick, no pain. A transient death. I hope I go that way, or something similar.
Death simply happens. It's the human condition. Hope you can make him smile sometime between now and...whenever. Death isn't sad so much as a realization that someone is gone, on the part of the survivors.
It seems like he knows he's close to the end. Even quiet company brings comfort, though it doesn't feel like it sometimes.
I hope things go well for you and the fam.
