are you looking for opinions on it as a linux operating system vs others? or what?

just do it and see if you like it, its not for everyone. Can't hurt to try, id take your other drive out if you are not 100% sure of what you are doing just incase

ubuntu is easy to install,i would actually suggest kubuntu if your looking for something a bit more fancy and loaded with eyekandy,if you have a nice graphics card look into running beryl + compiz for a insane desktop where you can set your windows on fire or spin your desktop around like a multi sided cube.

I used to volunteer for a anarchist community center where we rebuilt old computers installed ubuntu and gave them out to the poor,no virus's no crashes and its a lot faster then windows.

After installing download easyubuntu or automatix to install all the audio/video codecs flash extra fonts and other commonly used apps.

why is it buggy? is this a problem that you have had with your system or is this release more buggy then the rest?

It is buggy on my system, and also my friends system. Not sure about anyone elses however. It crashes sometimes, or stops allowing me to open up files. The 'I no longer feel like opening up files for you' thing is extremely annoying

I dont yet but when i get my new laptop that is going to be my main operating system (along with windows xp pro as a secondary at startup) unbuntu being linux means it requires a lot less memory and computer power to run fast and well, it has all the options and qualities of the new good operating systems (and probably less bugs) but requires a lot less system requirements. it is good I would recommend it

I dual boot gentoo and vista on my laptop.

Tend to use windows more though, as I spend a lot of my time writing shit up for college and Office 2007 > *.

Also, everytime I get on my nix parition I start fucking around with shit (I've been trying to get compiz-fusion to work for the last ever) and not doing anything productive

Try it out on a live disk...you don't have to commit to it and you can see if it works for you.
I installed it and all the stuff I used to do works fine.
VIRUS FREE FOR 3 YEARS BABY!!

gentoo > ubuntu.

gentoo.org

If you want to actually learn how to use nix, I'd recommend a distribution like gentoo, which doesn't focus on the gui.

I use vista for office 2007. OOo, staroffice, koffice and all the other open source alternatives do not cut it.. also it allows for portability, as all my college computers are loaded with proprietary ms software.

Because right from the beginning the emphasis is not on the gui.

After a few gentoo (and LFS) installs I have a much better understanding of how the GNU userland and the linux kernel and all the libraries come together to form an operating system. The amount of tweaking and playing I've done because of the lack of a gui from the start has proved very useful.

When I first started using linux I used to use slackware (and the dropline gnome package) and from there I would very rarely deviate into the command line, whereas with gentoo you have no choice.

I used ubuntu for many years, but I have since settled with archlinux after distro hoping for awhile.

I wouldnt use ubuntu again, but I would recommend the distro to those who are new to the *nix world. for those that are a little more computer-savvy or willing to learn, I'd just recommend debian off the bat.

and for the most part, arch > gentoo > ubuntu

ubuntu is nice because of how easy it is to use.
If it agrees with your hardware (which it usually does) you can go from starting the install to watching dvds, surfing the web, and listening to music in about 15 minutes (depending on hardware)

I won't even fuck with a windows install anymore.
Trying to find drivers,
install a real web browser,
install adware shit,
install a real word processor
install a real media player
installing more bullshit that i don't remember right now
and just fucking with that slow ass piece of shit in general gets me pissed off.

just being able to throw the install disk in a machine and click some stuff has me spoiled pretty bad.

Are you kidding?

Once you know how to use nix, it rarely deviates from flavour to flavour (i.e linux/bsd/solaris etc). Knowing how to use the command line allows you to be able to shell script, which is ultimately useful. Also there is a lot of brilliant apps, available for the command line that are either unavailable from the gui / much less powerful from the gui

For anyone thats serious about learning how to use their computer, learning how it all comes together, manipulating the command line, and playing with the internals of their operating system is a must. Most X apps are just frontends for command line apps anyway. As I previously said, with a good knowledge of the GNU Userland (which attempts to emulate unix) you can use any unix deviant efficiently (and remotely via ssh), and not just gnome or kde. Do you think people that run *nix servers around the world (which is about 60% of the internet) sit there physically, on gnome editting all conf files in gedit?

If you are serious about *nix, you need to know how to use the shell.

    #8084945 - 02/29/08 04:35 AM (16 years, 2 months ago)

i use gentoo and i love it. i think the reason i like it better than the others is because i learned linux in gentoo, so i know all the little ticks, tricks, tools, and most importantly... portage. it would take me a long time to get as familiar with any other distro, so i use gentoo.

i have spent time checking out other distros. i have spent my time in debian land (with debian, ubuntu, ubuntustudio, and mint.) i have used redhat (as fedora core and yellow dog), mandrake/riva, suse, and a few others. i always come back to gentoo, though. it just feels like home.

i wont bash anyone for using another distro. i think that is rediculous. you dont have to be a cli guru to be happy using open source software. i bet you could go months in ubuntu and never need to use the command line. nothing wrong with that, imo. if you do delve into the cli, your computing experience will be richer and more productive, but you arent 'lesser' for never learning it.

i think geeks are more prone to this behavior, though. for a lot of people, they learn linux because they have a love of computing and technology. this leads to more time in front of the computer and less time interacting with real people. when they finally gain mastery over something difficult, they bash people that havent got there yet. maybe this is from lack of social interaction? it seems to work that way in a lot of slices of the electronic pie. 'you use ubuntu? ur such a noob. learn how to compute like a real man.' or ' you wrote that script in ruby? ur an idiot. if it doesnt compile, it isnt a real language.' or 'insert another shitty, narrow minded comment here.'
