I also have that Peyote and Other Psychoactive Cacti book and I like it a good bit. The only thing is that the information in it about the different "false peyotes" is all either copied or semi-plagarized onto the net anyways.
This book is fairly cool. I liked it because there were lots of pictures but it's definitely not for ethno-lovers:

so far i have:
- Sacramental and Medicinal Cacti by M.S. Smith (i like it)
- Trout's notes on San Pedro and related Trichocereus species (great)
- Trout's notes on the Cultivation and Propagation of Cacti (great)
- The Pocket Encyclopedia of Cacti and Succulents by Edgar and Brian Lamb (1970 but pretty good actually)
- Simon and Schuster's Guide to Cacti and Succulents (pretty good)
- The Complete Book of Cacti and Succulents by Terry Hewitt (alright, but I would NOT recommend it, if you're serious about cacti, very basic)
- The Encyclopedia of Psychoactive Plants by Christian Ratcsh (covers all ethnobotanicals from catnip to psilocybes and all in between)
I went to a cacti collector's house and saw "The Cactus Family" by Anderson on his table. looked it up and it sells for $725 used and new at amazon. just ridiculous but an amazing book. by the time I can afford it it will cost thousands.
thanks for the 2 recommendations, I will try to look at them. keep em coming...

Aw dude!
"A Cactus Oddessy" is really good!
So are "Trout's Notes on San Pedro" (Edition 3, Part B)
M.S. Smith's book "SACRAMENTAL AND MEDICINAL CACTI Peyote, San Pedro and other Ethnopharmacological Cactaceae" is really good too!

Peyote and other Psychoactive cacti pretty much sucks.
It's very short...
And has some misinformation.
It's from like 1970...Very outdated.

Felt like reviving this thread to see if anyone new might notice it. Are there any good books on cacti identification? Any good field guides? Would sure be cool to bring along next time I'm in the desert looking at cacti (or in a nursery even).

Sato's books are excellent for ID'ing cultivars!
