Agents from the Metro anti-narcotics task force busted a major marijuana cultivation operation Friday morning, arresting two and seizing 150 plants, about $30,000 dollars in cash, and more.
The early-morning raid came in two simultaneous parts, with agents serving warrants at homes in Mountainaire and Parks. They found advanced marijuana-growing operations in both locations, including artificial lighting, progressive fertilizing systems and harvesting/packaging layouts. Agents seized about 150 growing plants and 13 pounds of packaged marijuana, more than 4 pounds of psychedelic mushrooms, and smaller amounts of LSD, Ecstasy and cocaine. Police gave the drugs a conservative estimated street value of about $135,000.
Agents also collected a large quantity of horticultural equipment and about $30,000 in cash.
Arrested were Scott R. Cheshire, 32, at the Mountainaire location, and Bradley A. Bergquist, 28, in Parks. Both men were booked into the Coconino County jail on charges of possession of marijuana for sale, cultivation of marijuana, possession of narcotic drugs, possession of dangerous drugs, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
The regional Northern Arizona Street Crimes Task Force (Metro) is comprised of officers from the Flagstaff Police Department, Department of Public Safety, and the Coconino County Sheriff's Office. Agents from the federal Drug Enforcement Agency assisted during the investigation, which police say has been ongoing since about the first of the year.

How do you suppose the authorities find out about these operations? Think someone ratted them out? I heard once that people with pretty big grow operations have their lights on a timer and the police can get a good idea about who's growing stuff by their electricity need patterns.

The new electric meters might perform this function.
I know but if some cop is a bit suspiscious, it can't be THAT hard to single out a single domicile and track the per-hour electricity habits... I know this info isn't recorded on a normal basis, but I'd imagine there is a way to do it.
If it's really just the OVERALL energy that cops use to determine if someone is growing a bunch of plants, there has to be a smarter way to use lights... maybe by getting a small generator or solar panel or something.... any system where outside people can't track your energy use.

Or if they're really suspicious, they could walk a drug-sniffing dog by the house, and if it 'smelled' something, it could 'signal' to the police so they could have a 'justifiable' reason to check it out.
Or, you know, they could kick the dog and make it bark. That works too.

so long as an individual that has an account with the electric company PAYS their bill on time no HUMAN will ever even look at your electricity consumption. on a daily basis that is. sure there's a person who comes and take a monthly reading but, that person's job isn't to estimate how much electricity you use.
a good rule of thumb is to not exceed 1000 watts per room in the house and that includes the living area. so if you have a 3bdrm place with a living area etc. you would be safe using 3-4000 watts. there are folks that use more than that and get by without alerting anyone of any suspicious electricity consumption.
people who get busted with grow ops etc. get busted because of loose lips. BOTTOM LINE. people talk and brag too much. they also get too greedy. why would you keep a grow op like that in the same place for a year???? there was 30,000 in cash found. that should have been sufficient funds to move the op after every crop. come in set up for 60-75 days do your thang, break it down and move it. Invest money into real estate!

they don't even take monthly readings around here
I'm sure its a state=by=state utility regulation.
Here you get read every so often then are sent estimated bills till the next reading, where any discrepencies are corrected.

It may not be the meter readers job to do anything but read what your electricity meter says, but you beter believe they're using that information to determine how much power you're using so they know how much to charge you.
Also, it is a lot of work to set up a proper grow room, and 30,000 does not buy any sort of house in any sort of neighborhood you want to be growing pot in. Many places require atleast a year long lease to rent, and then you've got to completely cover your tracks when you move, and deal with a potentially nosy or snoopy landlord. Rental laws vary from state to state, but generally rental units can be inspected on a regular basis as well, hence owning your own grow house is a better idea. Moving operations on a 60-90 day basis just is not feasible.

Not exactly.
When they suspect a grow op, they put a CT on the line leading to the house with a modem that constantly sends demand info to the power company. A CT is a Current Transducer that records the exact amperage being used. They already know to look for 12/12 patterns or 14/10 patterns. A smart grower will have two fruiting rooms, on opposite schedules so the damand remains stable. RR
