Psychedelic Research in the US - first time in 40+ years

On Saturday, February 23, 2008, after more than a decade of hard work, Dr. John Halpern conducted the first experimental session in his study of MDMA-assisted psychotherapy in twelve subjects with treatment-resistant anxiety associated with advanced-stage cancer (or PDF). Dr. Halpern is also conducting a major five-year NIDA-funded study into the neurocognitive risks of heavy use of Ecstasy, enhancing his ability to balance the risks and benefits of MDMA. This historic start of the MDMA/cancer anxiety study would not have been possible without the contributions of many people, including his co-investigators, the members of Institutional Review Boards (IRBs) at both the Lahey Clinic Medical Center and McLean Hospital, both institutions' administrators and staff, and federal regulatory officials at FDA and even DEA. The study's $250,000 budget is funded by Mr. Peter Lewis through a direct grant to McLean Hospital. MAPS assisted Dr. Halpern in the protocol design and approval process.
This experimental session was the first time in 42 years that a psychedelic was administered to a research subject at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Walter Pahnke, who conducted the classic Good Friday experiment in 1962, reported on the conclusion of his psilocybin research at Harvard in an unpublished paper written in 1966 (PDF).
The renaissance in psychedelic research has begun. It is now time to prove what we have been claiming for decades, that psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy can be beneficial to some patients in carefully controlled clinical settings. The promising results from MAPS' US MDMA/PTSD research, and the start of Dr. Halpern's MDMA/cancer anxiety study, suggest that the eventual approval of psychedelic psychotherapy is becoming more than a dream.
All the best,
Rick

YESSS!!! A huge step in the right direction for the U.S.
It hasn't been 40 years since the we've had psychedelic research in this country, but this is good news!
Sooo many psycho-active substances have HUGE potential for various therapeutic and healing practices.

where do I sign up to be a guinnie pig
This is great news I hope they do some tests with LSD and Mushrooms.
How cool would that be if you could go to your psychiatrist in the future and say you wanted an LSD treatment and he would dose you and the whole time stand by to inject you with some adavan or rhisperdohl just in case.

Now if only Dr. Halpern would discontinue being a DEA informant to help bust LSD distributors, he would make some real contributions to the psychedelic world.
And this isn't the first psychedelic research in the U.S. in 40 years, just the first at Harvard in 40 years.

If there is any scheduled substance that has hope for being allowed for medical purposes (other than cannabis, obviously) it is definitely MDMA

Yes, they have http://www.maps.org/research/
Quote:
MDMA-assisted Psychotherapy in the Treatment of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Investigators: Michael Mithoefer, MD Location: Charleston, South Carolina Sponsor: MAPS ..... his study is now fully approved and underway. Fifteen subjects have completed the study so far, and four participants who have received placebo have completed Stage 2, the open-label study continuation. The 17th subject has completed the second experimental session, and an 18th subject underwent the first experimental session. On January 16, 2007, MAPS' Data Safety Monitoring Board met and reviewed the data from the latest six (of 15), and the DSMB reported that they did not have any concerns about the safety of the study, and recommended that it continue without modification.
I'm still extremely excited since it is Harvard getting in on it. The school holds academic respect and this could be a pretty big swing in the right direction.

How cool would it be to have ayahuasca healing medicare, or LSD workshops (tests?) in structured and (loosely) sanctioned facilities.
Or Iboga treatment centres offered as part of welfare programs.
...
Really the possibilities are endless, and the fact that a Major pinnacle in the education world has opened the door for this, speaks hugely towards a frontier of inner revolution.
I've ALWAYS, since i was 16 wanted to be apart of psychedelic therapy through legitamite means. After reading "DMT: the spirit molecule" all the Red Tape Strassman had to go through in order to pursue his study, left me feeling hopeless. These current studies leave a rich oppurtunity for those of us that are interested in that kind of thing.
Read here: http://www.maps.org/students_research.html info on getting involved as a researcher.
and here: http://www.maps.org/volunteer.html is the link to become a test subject
Please consider donate to MAPS at this most important time.

I remember a few years ago when some Shroomerite was the subject of some legitimate psychedelic test. I forget who it was. It would probably be a difficult thread to find.
