serious pressure cooker problems... please help
    #8061653 - 02/23/08 05:36 PM (15 years, 11 months ago)

i simply dont understand what is happening...

just got a presto pc that can hold 7 qt jars at a time

first attempt at PCing... used 7 jars. put about 3" of water in the Pc and put the trivet in (the metal stand that the jars sit on) the water was touching the bottom of the jars... i thought this wouldnt be good, but read a few posts on here saying it would be fine so i did it anyways... ended up with 7 cracked jars and cooked grains

2ND ATTEMPT: just did one jar this time, and i put about 3" of water in the PC, then lined the bottom with jar lids, some chicken wire, and then the trivet, to keep the jars about 4" above the boiling water... i figured this would work fine... ended up with the synthetic filter disc MELTING INTO A PLASTIC MESS... i dont understand it, and the grains looked cooked as well

what the F is going on here?

did you just open the lid of the pc when it was finished the first time? I believe your supposed to take the weight off and wait for the preasure inside to normalize before removing the lid. Just to confirm.

Are you screwing the band on the lid so that it is really tight? The band should be screwed on loosely. You want the pressure inside the jar to easily adjust to the pressure inside the PC. If the jar is unable to adjust "Pressure wise" it will crack. (the above scenario is for lids that don't have inoculation holes in them)

You need less than a cup of water in your PC, I use this much and end up with water to discard after 60 minutes of PC'ing. Not that there's anything wrong with more water just that it makes it take longer to get up to pressure.

Just use inch of water, the jar lid rings, and whatever your using as a platform to set your jars on. For your jars I would recommend using the normal lids used in the proper rubber down way with a 3/8" to 1/2" hole in them with some polyfill, or some micro pore and a tyvek cover, either or.

I've never used a synthetic filter disc but I generally make it a point to keep things that melt out of my PC.

The box should have told you 1 inch of water. I use about 3/4 inch in my 7qrt.

are you sure you got a good filter disk from a reputable supplier. RR said that filter disks can usually be PCed for many years and still last. If your filter disk was crap it could account for no airflow during your first PC and if it just plain sucked it melting on your second PC. Did you remember the aluminum foil?

I doubt too much water is causing cracked jars. It's usually a pressure problem that causes that.

-Make sure your lids have some kind of way to vent

-Make sure you aren't pulling the weight off while there
is still pressure in the PC

-Make sure you aren't running out of water. I've done this before and I had cracked jars, melted bags and lots of stink from burnt grains!

- Make sure you read the directions for the PC and are adjusting the heat correctly to maintain pressure- The vent shouldn't be constantly sputtering.

i have foil over the lids

the lids are on loosely

and i dont take the weight off, i simply shut off the stove and leave it until morning

my old small pc worked very easily, although i could only do 1 jar at a time...

will try one more time and get back to this thread to report
