First attempt (pics)
    #8061358 - 02/23/08 04:51 PM (15 years, 11 months ago)

Well me and my friend have lurked here since we randomly bought some B+ spores in Toronto and decided to grow our own mushrooms.

We followed the PF tek mostly. BRF and vermiculite in 1/2 pint jars, and later large glasses with tinfoil on top. We have a proper PC and none of our 15 jars got contaminated.

Well the first cake matured this week. We staggered our jars, so only one cake has matured so far, with three more having large pins on them, and the rest still in jars. We are very proud of this little guy.

We probably wouldn't have been able to do it without this awesome website.

The cake yielded 32g/3.1g, wet/dry.

I have a question now though. Some casing teks call for PF cakes to be buried or mixed into the ibulk substrate. Is there any reason we cant use spent cakes, after they have finished fruiting?

wow
i really wish my first grow had been that successful xD

mycelium cultures have lifespans of their own
spent cakes will sometimes start again, but the culture will be weak and die soon after (like when people throw out their spent cakes in a pile and a few mushies grow)

look for info on senescence

Indeed, the verm we used was on the coarse side. In fact, its about as coarse as the "do not use verm this coarse" example in the tek. I tried to crush it up more for one of the jars but it didn't seem to make much of a difference.

So I think I get the deal with using old cakes... But is there no part of a mushroom that you can use to propagate them like plants? Or is it just totally different.

It also turns out that my friend threw these pictures up independently (and before) me the other day. Sorry for the double post.

Any inner tissue of a fresh mushroom will grow out over food and then fruit again!
Think of it as stem cells.
This tissue may be dropped onto (into) Agar (or brown rice flour and water), sterile grain (any type, rye/corn/wild bird seed mix), a mix of brown rice flour and vermiculite ("cakes")
and then fruited or moved on to bulk foods IE mixed with boiled (pasteurized) straw, cardboard, old phone books, wood chips, coffee grounds, bibles, toilet paper rolls, broken IKEA furniture or almost anything cellulose or wood based
In short any part of a mushroom may be treated as a cutting like a plant....but inner tissue is used because it is cleaner.
Good luck sir!
you have made a great start.

Cloning eh? Thats more like it. Should serve as a decent intro to doing LCs too.

Another cake has matured. One GIANT 19g one, and the only other one is was 1g.

We will attempt a spore print of this one.

spent = used up the nutrients, it's done:thumbdown:

Throw the spent cakes outside under some shit and hope for the best(Once the weather breaks). That's what I would do with them.

I thought it was some kind of hair product too, when my buddy first produced them. Turns out he took some CD racks and sliced them up into bite-sized pieces.

We harvested the fourth cake today. Total dry weight looks to be ~10g for 4 cakes.
