I've never bought a commercially available strain of oyster before, but I've not come across a strain that has anything except wispy, thin mycelium during expansion into spawn. Once it completely covers its substrate, the mycelium will "flesh out" and become much more dense in its growth habit.

All of my oysters are from samples collected in the wild and isolated at home. (P. pulmonarius, only)

It might just be a difference in species, or cultivation parameters- not necessarily a sign of weakness in the mycelium. I don't have any problems with fruits, colonization times, etc. so don't stress over what it looks like in comparison to an "ideal" phenotype. Just make sure that the overall health and growth appears normal. Nice even growth, good rate of expansion (at least consistent throughout a particular grow), and lack of contamination. If you're really not sure, just do one pint jar of your oyster to see if you can get it to fruit under your presumed future operational parameters and judge the strain for yourself.

Thanx for the response. Its weird the oysters must be trying to prove themselves, cause today my jars have almost doubled in The thickness of myc.Its thinnly spread through most of the jars, but now its just getting thicker.pretty neat.Im used to cubes that start out thick and just move throughout jar.the other thing that had me wondering is the vendor I got it from had it dated 05/07 so I was worried about declining vigor.
