well i think he was looking for a scientific answer to his question, not a philosophical answer like everyone gave him.

Quote:
ife is a condition that distinguishes organisms from inorganic objects, i.e. non-life, and dead organisms, being manifested by growth through metabolism, reproduction, and the power of adaptation to environment through changes originating internally. A physical characteristic of life is that it feeds on negative entropy.[1][2] In more detail, according to physicists such as John Bernal, Erwin Schrödinger, Eugene Wigner, and John Avery, life is a member of the class of phenomena which are open or continuous systems able to decrease their internal entropy at the expense of substances or free energy taken in from the environment and subsequently rejected in a degraded form (see: entropy and life).[3][4] A diverse array of living organisms can be found in the biosphere on Earth. Properties common to these organisms—plants, animals, fungi, protists, archaea and bacteria—are a carbon- and water-based cellular form with complex organization and heritable genetic information. They undergo metabolism, possess a capacity to grow, respond to stimuli, reproduce and, through natural selection, adapt to their environment in successive generations.

a virus is on the edge of life it evolves and has dna, but no conscience i consider anything that can act in a manner that is unique to that individual like another entity in the same situation might make a different move i call that living

As an active AI person, I expect this question will become very relevant over the next 50 years or so. The old answer I was giving was that it was something capable of reproduction. That would include viruses, both computer and physical. I really think that the best science can come up with is "I know it when I see it" lol...

That would also include things like crystals. Do you think crystals are alive? Im sure in the mystery forum they do...

lol, yeah. I know someone that showed me her "rose quartz water", which was a spray bottle of water that cost like $10. It was made by "soaking" rose quartz in water to transfer it's essence or some such shit. So, plain water .
But, hell, if believing that shit gets you through the day, so be it. Better than smoking crack I guess...
As for crystals being alive...nah. But what about DNA? It reproduces. I think the boundary between sentient life and organized matter is blurry.

if you're not living, you're dying.
We're all dying.
-------------------- Republican Values: 1) You can't get married to your spouse who is the same sex as you. 2) You can't have an abortion no matter how much you don't want a child. 3) You can't have a certain plant in your possession or you'll get locked up with a rapist and a murderer. 4) We need a smaller, less-intrusive government.
