Earth Juice slime?
    #8059658 - 02/23/08 09:28 AM (15 years, 11 months ago)

Hey All, I'm using Earth Juice organic nutrients in a 10 gallon DWC hydro setup. yesterday I started noticing a weird dark green/gray/brown slime forming on the bottom of the net pots, and partially on the roots as well.

Is this just what Earth Juice does, or is it possible I've got some nasties in my tub?

I'm gonna change the water today anyway... think there will be any problems if it doesn't sit for 24 hours before it goes in the tub?

sounds like some algae or something , i would do a water /nute change and clean out your resevoir, on the water it is best to let it sit for 24 but i think you will be fine

Do you have any idea what the advantage is to letting it sit? I don't want to buffer the pH up and then have it shoot to pH 9 24 hours later and kill them again...

So in case anyone's curious, I went to my local hydroponics shop, and did some research online and found the answer to that question.

Apparently one of the organic ingredients in the fertilizer is a kind of natural preservative, but in the process catalyzes to a dissolved gas within the mixture (the guy explaining this to me was really stoned, so I'm kind of filling in the gaps for his terrible explanation ).

either way, it's best to bubble for 24-48 hours because it helps dissipate these gaseous remains, and counteract the acidity of the solution. I mixed it at 1 tablespoon per gallon and got a pH of ~3.5!

Either way, mixing at lower concentration levels will help with that and bubbling for only about 5 or 6 hours is adequate. the current solution I'm running is 1/2 teaspoon/gallon and the pH after 3 hours was 4.8, and using a very small amount of organic buffer I reached 5.8 and the plants are looking happy.

I also scrubbed the entire tub with soap and water and cleaned all the net pots/hydroton with a gentle solvent, and gently washed the algae off the plant roots in lukewarm water.

Thanks

The plants are looking happy, already perking up a bit (they didn't like sitting in a water filled dish while I changed the water :frown: )

They have tons of new growth on them from the last couple days, so they should really explode in the next 3-4 days if I did it all right.

Earth Juice is great stuff but look into Pure Blend Pro. Now the slime is caused by a bacteria in the water. Use hydroguard to get rid of the problem. It's just a good bacteria that you are putting in that eats the bad one. :gethigh:

Oh yeah when using Earth Juice keep your eye on the ph.
