the smell of colonizing poo...

So I tried spawning to cow poo for the first time on tuesday, this is my first attempt at anything other than cakes. I took a fully colonized half-pint BRF cake and broke up by hand, spawning to a quart of 50/50 black kow manure/verm. I think i got the substrate to field capacity as far as i can tell and then pasteurized on the stove top in boiling water for about 45 minutes. anywho its been chillin in the closet covered with aluminom foil and a couple of air holes for FAE, i just checked it today and i can definitely see growth, however when i took a whiff i didnt smell that familiar shroomy smell ya get with cakes. the odor wasnt overbearing but there is defintely something there. any advice? maybe i can post a pic of what i see, any advice would be appreciated.

With the way it looks, should be fine. Their is usually a little earthy odor that will lessen as it colonizes.

What type of cow poop did you get? Get them off the floor and put them on a shelf. 90% of all contaminants are within 2 feet of the floor due to gravity.

oh its up on a shelf in my closet, i know about contams hanging out near the floor : ) so i totaly forgot to even out the substrate i guess its too late to go leveling it out now? also do you guys know how long these things take or is it just one of those "its done when its done" kinda deals? i plan to case with straight verm for now as i cant find garden lime around here so i can correct the ph of peat moss/verm.
its black kow poop, i ran my hands through it and its pretty fluffy actually, not many sticks or other debris floating around. maybe next time ill try mixing it with straw or coir? this hobby is great and this site is an excellent source of information, kudos to everyone
