Limited space available. Secrecy required
    #8058988 - 02/23/08 12:49 AM (15 years, 11 months ago)

Alright folks, as with most of these posts I am looking for help and advice. I have read quite a few guides and looked into several different growing methods. I have a nearly failed batch and I do not wish to repeat that process. I have several good and white 1 pint cakes but I am hesitant to proceed without some suggestions.

I have a very limited amount of space to work with (The top of my closet) and this little operation needs to stay very hidden... what might be my best bet in this situation?

Thanks folks. You are all beautiful people.

the big problem with closets is fresh air exchange. make sure you air out your room and then your closet often, and fan the cakes very often (as much as you can without dropping humidity too much.. and youll also want to expose the cakes to light. ten minutes of direct sunlight is great when thats all the light the cakes will get.

A little rubbermaid type of container with some wet perlite and hand fanning will work just fine. As hazey stated, you should try to get some sunlight on it for at least a few minutes a day if possible for best results, but just about any source of light will do the trick. I would also suggest dunking the cake prior to the first flush if possible.

I was gonna post some nonsense about privacy and timing your actions around the other people in the house but as I think about it, the bottom line is you can't probably hide it if they ever look in that closet your going to get a "whats that?". If your growing in someone's house I think you owe it to them to run it by them and make sure they're OK with it.

I'm tired of telling people the same thing myself. Usually they come up with some B.S. reason why they're hiding it. If someone is already disrespecting their parents, family, roommates... then they aren't going to stop because we're telling them to.

You should look into pre-sterilized mycobags. Use the search feature.

Also you should really think about what FooManShroom and Crasher had to say about this thread. (Limited space available. Secrecy required) :whack:

I think it's possible, with a damp enough substrate and casing layer, to do basically a self contained casing, that is to say, with just a lid over the smaller container itself with a few small holes in it and no fruiting chamber per se. You'd have to search around for the specs, I know I've seen pics of set ups like this. On a very small scale, you can make disposable cup microcasings. Use a whole or half pf tek cake and basically just make a casing in a plastic cup, a layer of vermic, a layer of crumbled cake, and a layer of good, fresh, damp casing material on top, with a sandwich bag or something similar rubber banded around the top, and set in the back corner of a high shelf. With a batch that small, air exchange just isn't a big deal. And you can do lots of them, which can be handy if you don't want to put all your eggs in one basket. In terms of yield, these aren't much better than just fruiting the cake, but they could be done without the need for a larger FC, which is the big space eater in my setup.

Another option is to take a fairly accurate measurement of the exact space you've got to work with, and scale a monotube to that and your available mycelium. Even if you can't get horse poo, you can probably whip up a bulk substrate and pasturize it. Figure that horse poo or anything it's density takes up about a square foot every five lbs or so at about 4 inches deep, and otherwise just wing it. Try to find a container that fits snugly in the space and make a small monotub to scale. The con being that this is the ultimate eggs in one basket move. It'll either yield much more than individual cakes, or nothing.

Also, does the closet have a light in the top? If so, get ahold of one of those new energy saving bulbs, put it in their, and just leave it on for a couple hours a day. It won't mess the heat up in the closet, and it won't make an appreciable difference in the power bill for the house if you pass out and leave it on for 12 hours. Most importantly, you don't have to leave the closet open.

If you do the tub, drape a blanket neatly over it when you're not "sunning" it, and stack blankets on top of it. If you're doing the cups, set them in a milk crate and do the same. If they're looking for contraband, it's the first place they'll go, but you can control and predict that. What you can't predict is when parent A thinks that you've got their copy of Lou Reed's Transformer in your damn room again somewhere. They'll look in a tote. They won't go rifling through a neat stack of blankets.

While I'm giving you all this advice, I'd suggest you find an emancipated friend who'll let you grow at their house for a cut of the fruits. Morally speaking, I'm a utilitarian. This has the potential to cause more drama and horribleness for the rest of your life than a few trips is worth just this minute. If you ABSOLUTELY cannot find a freinds house to grow at, just give it a few years or however long and get your own place. Hell, if you live somewhere temperate, rent a small storage space under a fake name. Nothing sucks like being alienated from your parents, and no one knows how to do it like the Shock Troops of the War on Drugs.

Haha, Alright guys. You all have some very developed morals and I do appreciate them. heres the deal and I'm spinning you no BS. I am 25, I nearly own my humble little abode. My One roommate knows the situation. The secrecy is from the rest of the world. My 4.5 room little house has no basement and windows in every room, this is a busy little part of town.

I do appreciate your concern though, lets get back to growing, lol.

Also. Its a little chilly here this time of the year. I've read the reviews and been told that B+ is hearty in most conditions but how, really, will 67-70 degree temperatures effect the process? (I'm no money bags and the gas bill has been through the roof!)

I'm reticent about the one larger container because this option I tried. I don't think that batch is dead but it is very very slowly continuing to colonize the mix in the box. I thought I followed the direction from shroomwizard rather thoroughly which is the frustrating part.

Would it be best to cut my cakes into 2 or three "wheels", or smaller cylinders and fruit those in something like the cups, only a little larger? Say half or 1/3rd of a pint cake in a food storage bin thats 6 x 6 x 1ft tall... this has been what I'm leaning towards thus far.

And yes I have put a light in the closet. small florescent that I had to install.
