Reconstruct the Polo Grounds?
    #8058740 - 02/22/08 10:55 PM (15 years, 11 months ago)

I mean the old Polo Grounds in New York. It was a strangely designed field, with the home-run distance to centerfield generally agreed upon to be 505 feet. But there were no foul lines going out to the outfield; the foul line ran straight from the third base line and to the bleacher, so any slicing ball that would be a foul-ball nowadays would have been a homerun. The alley was at 265 feet, give or take a few feet on each side.

This is craziness!

So, would you like to see a field like this built today? It seems that some of the newer stadiums like to incorporate some little feature or another to make themselves somehow "relevant", but generally just makes the place look tacky. Tal's Hill, the hill in the the middle of the center field wall in Houston comes to mind.

But I think having a place that is completely contrary to everything that exists in ballpark design would be something cool to see. It would probably be more spectacle than baseball, and would be for this reason undesirable.

But I would pay money to see it.

It would suck to play outfield there.

Inside the park home-runs were apparently extremely common.

One thing I don't like about baseball is the lack of regulation when it comes to fields, or more specifically outfields.

How can that possibly bother you?

Shit like ivy or a giant wall or especially a hill with a fucking flagpole don't bother me so much as I find them interesting that they do it.
I've always found it weird that baseball has no real regulation for fields, as opposed to every other sport know to man since 1454 AD.

Someone needs to get it over with and just install an olympic size swimming pool in the outfield.

George Carlin, on the matter:

--------------------
Is a man not entitled to the sweat of his brow?
No, says the man in Washington; it belongs to the poor.
No, says the man in the Vatican; it belongs to God.
No, says the man in Moscow; it belongs to everyone.

I rejected those answers. Instead, I chose something
different. I chose the impossible. I chose...
Rapture.

It doesn't really, I just need reasons to knock on baseball.

Did you know that Ryan Braun, the Rookie-of-the-Year 3rd basemen for the Milwaukee Brewers is known as "The Hebrew Hammer"?

If that doesn't make you love you baseball, I don't know what will.

I think the league has to approve the fields.

Did you put relevant in fquotation marks because you don't really know what it means?

Yeah, wtf, bring back the polo grounds

No, I put it in quotes because I think that while the people who approve these changes do so in the attempt to make their stadium matter or stand out, they usually fail.

So they are aiming for relevant, but missing.
