Spanish language lesson torrents...advice/suggestions?
    #8055409 - 02/22/08 07:54 AM (16 years, 2 months ago)

Heres the deal.  I've never used torrents.  I'm one of the rare people who kinda respects copyright laws.  And besides, I like to have original print CDs and album art when I collect my music.  And I'm not much a a movie buff.  I just rent what interests me or buy the DVD or Blu-Ray if I want to add it to my collection.  Besides, if there isn't at least a few schmucks like me paying for it then no one will even produce these things for the rest of you to steal, right? :smirk:

But I am dying to continue my Spanish language lessons.  Over a year ago I bought and used an introductory version of Pimsleur's Spanish lessons.  It worked remakably well for me and I have retained what I learned for a full year even without regular use of it.  So I would love to continue on with my studies.  But the problem is the outrageous price.  I'd be happy to pay for it if it was reasonable.  But even on E-bay it can cost $500 to buy the full series used (Spanish I, II, III, IV).

So, I am considering torrents.  But I am wary.  I don't even know much at all about how to use torrents.  And I pride myself on the fact that in over a decade of internet use I have never had a computer virus.  So I was wondering if anyone had advice for a noob in this department.  What do I need to do?  Whats the best sites to use?  What do I watch out for?  And what are the chances that I'll pick up a bug along the way?

I'm not entirely comfortable at the thought of stealing copyrighted content (sorry, thats just me) but I'm willing to at least explore this avenue for the time being.  So...any help out there?

This will explain what you need to know: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.torrent

To sum it all up; yes it's easy, yes there is always a possibility of getting a bug, tho not a big one, you need a tracker website like bitmon.com or isohunt.com to find the torrent, and then a program like azureus to download said torrent. (azureus.com)

If you are going to download a language program, I would recommend Rosetta Stone, which is available on many tracker sites. Good luck.

Get Rosetta Stone for sure, probably the most common and most successful language program out there.

There is a host application, and then language packs you can download to learn. It's pretty fucking cool

Yeah, Rosetta Stone is pretty popular and I hear it works well. But Pimsleur is strictly audio lessons and I am able to listen to them while I am working. I wouldn't take the time to sit down at the end of the workday and do my studies if I was using Rosetta Stone. But I learn while I am at work with Pimsleur. I listen to talk radio or music all day at work and all I had to do was substitute my Spanish lessons for an hour or so a day.

Besides, like I said, it has worked for me already and I just want to continue on with my lessons.

Yeah, that was the first one I found also. Downloaded it. The files play fine on my computer but I cannot burn the MP3 files to an audio CD and they won't play on my portable MP3 player (which I bought specifically for this project). Don't know why this is but it was frustrating.

So I found a different copy elsewhere and downloaded it last night. The new ones work good everywhere so far. And the new version I found is also the same voices as the one I had used last year. The version above is the same lessons but the voices are different people and it seems strange to me.

So for a $60 investment in a portable MP3 player (which was actually unnecessary, I could've just burned audio CDs) I am back in bussiness. As long as I'm not a slacker I should be speaking much better Spanish by the end of the year!

It's a shame Rocket Spanish isn't available. I actually bought it about a year ago and the program is amazing. Much better than Rosetta Stone. I searched for it, not well, but I looked and couldn't find any torrents.

Maybe I should upload it.

hey summit... can you give the link to the torrent you found?  I want to try that Pimsleur program.

I am going to be able to listen to it mostly throughout the day via mp3, so that is where I want to start.

Thanks.

Y'know, the only time I have ever used torrents was for this project (getting my spanish lessons).  And to be honest I was lucky to figure it out at the time.  So I couldn't really tell you where or how I found it or provide you any links.  Sorry.

But the program has been working well for me.  I am a bit of a slacker and would be much farther along in my studies if I was more dilligent.  But I am slowly getting a little better each week and retaining what I am learning.

I like to have simple conversations in spanish with the guys at work now.  They humor me and will stick with spanish as long as I can keep it going.  This usually amounts to no more then a few simple exchanges back and forth before I need to revert back to english, but I am learning.  And they get a kick out of watching me struggle with their native tongue.

Also, I was able to translate some spanish from a movie for my wife the other day (there was just a short conversation between a cop and a little girl without any subtitles).  I was a bit surprised that I could understand as much as I did.  My wife had not gotten any of it.
