Good Music Management Software
    #8055259 - 02/22/08 05:32 AM (16 years, 4 months ago)

I'm looking for something free (or crackable), something that will let me quickly search/sort music, something that will let me edit ID3 tags, and obviously play the music.

Something nice and simple yet functional. I use foobar2000 right now, but it doesn't seem as feature rich as I would like.

And please don't say iTunes.. iTunes is close to what I'm looking for, but is too bulky. Windows Media Player is also close...but also too bulky.

Anyone know of something like this?

I use winamp.
You can use Godfather to edit ID3 tags.  But you can't play music with it.  Still, it's a neat program.

god damn you guys beat me to it. honestly, the best way to have a music collection is to download smart.. try to hit up whole albums and download and sort them immediately. i do mine \music\genre\artist\album\song.mp3. if you organize your music that way, something as simple as winamp is the shit.

I never figured it out with Winamp. I just use Godfather since it's virtually automatic. Just make a setting and all files in your music folder will follow the pattern you set. You don't have to edit every track or album.

Maybe you can do that with Winamp as well, I've just never figured out how to do it.

Yep, Winamp now has an auto-tag feature. Though it doesn't work at all with obscure titles. Lots of electronic music doesn't tag correctly.

Within winamp, right click the song, "view file info", the first tab in the bottom right corner says "auto-tag".

If you want to auto-tag more than one, highlight the songs you want, right click and highlight "send to" and click on "auto-tag".

My main problem with iTunes is that it constantly can't find my files!
I'd click a song to play and it would give me an error message saying the song can't be found, and I'd have to find it and reload it, along with every other song from the album (individually!) because if it couldn't find a song, it wouldn't be able to find the whole album.  This happened ALOT.  I have a few albums I had to reload multiple times.  I don't know what the deal is.
After a month or so, I uninstalled that bulky crap and went straight back to winamp.

^probably because you are moving the actual files. This happens to be often as well. I have learned the importance of putting the file where i want it then inputing into itunes. I also used winamp but just to convert from flac to wav. I prefer iTunes to organize all my music.

You cant move the files from their original location after you drop it into iTunes. Of course it can't play it, it doesn't know where the file is if you are moving it around or changing the name of the folder its in, etc.

This is most likely the problem you are having, I'm sure of it.

itunes is notorious for moving files, it's not just him. it's a bug in the software as far as i know.

iTunes does not move files by itself. I've used it for years and the only times it has given me the "file could no be found" error message was when I moved a file from its original location.

A music management program isn't going to move your files without your permission. At least IME, don't know what crazy version you guys are running lol.

If it was a bug its definitely not there anymore and hasn't been there since I first started using it like around 03-04

maybe i remember the story wrong but i could have sworn itunes, in one version or another, actually physically moved your files and forgot where it put them. people were saying their music "disappeared"

never happened to me, not once. In the end I always found out it was actually me that accidentally moved something or changed the folder name that a song was in.
