I'm going to Costa Rica in May. I'll be going from San Jose to Arenal, Monteverde, Jaco Beach, and the Manuel Antonio National Park. Should be the rainy season. I've read some posts but not many are too specific on what/where I should be looking in Costa Rica.
Thanks

Asking when or where mushrooms grow is against the rules. Please read the rules at the top of the hunting forum
A simple search found me this
http://www.shroomery.org/8461/Which-mushrooms-grow-wild-in-my-area
These grow in cow poop just like in america Panaeolus cyanescens Psilocybe cubensis
Research these Psilocybe aztecorum Psilocybe mexicana

I am not asking for specific locations, I'm just wondering which towns/areas have a greater likelyhood of having mushies... I have read which species grow there.

Right like i said read the damn rules.
Here i will provide you with a full link and an excerpt of the rules.
Read Me!!! Yes You n00b: Mushroom Hunting Forum Rules 3. Do not ask what mushrooms can be found growing in your state or immediate area. This information is easily found in the Mushroom Hunting FAQ and/or has been posted at least once elsewhere on the net. Also see this document: http://www.shroomery.org/8461/Which-mushrooms-grow-wild-in-my-area
Other than that check a cow field after rains.

your best bet would be finding Psilocybe cubensis. i went to south america last year and there were plenty of cow fields. go to a rural area and find a cow farm, i guarantee you will find some nice cubes becasue people down there dont rape the fields like they do hear and the farmers are too poor to put salt in the field to prevent them from growing. do a search and look at some pics of cubes...implee made a nice post of the different shapes and colors that a cube will grow to look like. cubes are very easy to spot and identify good luck

Please note I have made this so I can just copy and paste sections for referencing noobs when they need help, I dont care if others have made guides before K THNX.
A typical day on the shroomery forums goes like this. "Hi i live in City, State. I would like to know what type of shrooms can be picked and when? please tell me where are the best places to find them." Most noobs skip the rules that are posted right there on the main forum and ask what they want to ask, and its annoying and noobs suck balls. (unless of course they are the rare kind of noob who reads the rules up front) so please take the time to read the rules first Read Me!!! Yes You n00b: Mushroom Hunting Forum Rules, and once you have found a mushroom please take the time to make a proper ID request. Sample ID request - READ BEFORE POSTING AN ID REQUEST!
Are you not in Texas and are still curious about what mushrooms grow in your area? Chances are Panaeolus subbalteatus grows in your state. Subbedhunter's Complete Guide to Panaeolus Subbalteatus
And to find which active mushrooms grow wild in your state or country check out Which mushrooms grow wild in my area?
--------------------------------------------------
Please note that Psilocybe cubensis also grows in other states, and other countries as well.
United States Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia (rare, only near the coast) Cuba, Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Trinidad, Kenya,
Australia New South Wales, Queensland
South America Argentina, Belize, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Peru, Venezuela,
And Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Phillippines, Thailand, Vietnam
--------------------------------------------------
Psilocybe cubensis These mushrooms are nick named “Cubes” also known as just “Shrooms” Psilocybe cubensis can also be shortened to P. cubensis. This is one of the most cultivated (home grown) active mushroom.
Where do they grow? They grow most commonly on cow poop, they can also be found growing on horse poop, but they arent found as commonly on horse poop.
What do they look like?
Cap The cap when young will be almost completely golden colored, then when they get more matured they have a great golden yellow fade on top. When they get really old or sun bleached the caps can sometimes turn really pale and will no longer be gold or yellow. Sometimes the caps will have spores sprayed on top of them and turn a purple color. The caps can have a verity of different shapes due to weather or genetics. Bell, domed, flat, flat with a nipple, or just crazy shaped.
Closed caps are pretty solid colored

Sun bleached

Golden fade

Spores on cap

bell shaped

Crazy shaped

Flat or with nipple

Stem Yellowish colored, and hollow, There is a veil present on the stem with purplish spores on one side and the bottom side (if visible) will be yellow/whitish/blueish/purplish. The stem will bruise blue/green when you squeeze it or break it in two. Also the base of the stems will probably have mycelium growing on them.
See the stems are yellow and have veils with spores dropped on them sometimes the veils are small sometimes they are big.

Cubes have hollow stems but Texas cubes are known to be pretty dense and sometimes are pretty meaty and solid and not so hollow inside.

Here is mycelium, its perfectly ok to eat.

Gills Purpleish brown, sometimes they are sporeless and only have a light brown color. The gills will also bruise blue/green

Bluing The gills and stem will bruise blue or green

When can they be found? Well in Texas people have found them all year around, even around christmas.. Its best to have around 75F-90F temperatures and a good rain storm... So whenever it rains for a decent while go out to those fields. If its kind of hot out, check under the trees and the poop around tall grass it helps block the sun.
Threads Horse field cubes Ive found a horse field that was producing cubes, the horses ate grass, hay, and whatever other plants they felt like munching on... The field previously had cows and horses interchanged throughout the years but the poop was definitely horse poop that they were growing from. Almost all of the pictures from this thread were found on horse poop.
PinheadX found PLENTY of Cubes growing on mulch piles. Now it is possible that it could have been someones out door grow, or maybe the mulch/compost/manuer they used had myceliu found PLENTY of Cubes growing on mulch piles. Now it is possible that it could have been someones out door grow, or maybe the mulch/compost/manuer they used had mycelium in it or spores from the cow field which inoculated the whole pile. This is the craziest thing ive ever seen and it is in NO way common, but his finds should inspire you to keep and eye out everywhere for cubes even off the field. Never say never, MUTANT CUBE, zonate cube, and a polypore.
--------------------------------------------------
Panaeolus cyanescens These mushrooms are nick named “Copes” dont confuse them with “Psilocybe cyanescens” they are not the same mushroom. This mushroom is stronger than Psilocybe cubensis. I haven't found a cope yet, cubes are my main mushroom so I dont feel I am qualified to give that much information on them.
Where do they grow? They grow right along side of Psilocybe cubensis on Cow poop, I believe one mycologist has reported copes growing on horse poop but it isnt common. (I will try to find the documentation on this) Some cow fields produce more copes than cubes some fields produce more cubes than copes.

You dont even need all that but noobs to cubes like a picture reference, and all the different shapes can scare a noob off..
Just remember 1) gold faded cap 2) veil with purplish spores on it 3) cut it in two, it should bruise blue 4) spore print purple/brownish

yeah 99% of the time that you see a gold cap in a cow field its a cube. personally, i have never seen a gold top shroom in a cow field that wassnt a cube but i didnt want to say 100% and be responsible for someone eating the wrong thing. the bluish/green bruising will probably be the easiest way for you to id them

Well i found this little guy out at the cow field not a cube but has a yellow color
You wont die from it though... Plus a noob might pass up the ones with spores on the cap or one that is water logged thinking its not a cube.
Plus take a look at derks post
See it has a yellowish tone of color to it and someone new to hunting might think its just a water logged cube when its not
But if its vivid yellow then its most likely good to go :D:D

hahaha well your right chances are its gunna be a cube, but for noobs with no mushroom experience they will sometimes think they are indeed cubes...
People have thought green gills were sun bleached cubes in the past thoughj
The small yellow mushroom wont get much bigger than that though, and they arent as vivid yellow/gold as cubes... Plus the stem was brown... I dont see how some of these mushrooms can be confused for cubes, but it happens

I didn't think the question was that out of line, there are a lot of threads on a lot of locations, and seeing as I've never been to Costa Rica, I thought that it would make sense to ask some questions before I left.

I did read the forum rules and guidelines, and I didn't think that my question, although it may have violated a rule, I didn't think that since the question was a more obscure one that it would be an issue.

There are threads about Cal/Aus/Georgia, and therefore questions about those places can be answered by a simple serach, there is not a lot of info about Costa Rica here (although there is some), but they are all old and people helping in those threads have since left the forum, so they are unavailable to ask. I figured maybe somebody else would have some good info.
And you had good info on cubes, but I've seen it posted before here.

See there are more resources than just the search...
The faq (and the rules) link you specificly to what mushroom grows in my area page... THen you goto costa rica find the mushroom type, then you look up that mushrooms habitat and growing conditions...
Im going to show yuo step by step how i found out this info
I click the rules http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/2263556/an/0/page/0
I read this part 3. Do not ask what mushrooms can be found growing in your state or immediate area. This information is easily found in the Mushroom Hunting FAQ and/or has been posted at least once elsewhere on the net. Also see this document: http://www.shroomery.org/8461/Which-mushrooms-grow-wild-in-my-area
I follow the link http://www.shroomery.org/8461/Which-mushrooms-grow-wild-in-my-area
I scroll down to Costa Rica Panaeolus cyanescens Psilocybe aztecorum Psilocybe mexicana Psilocybe cubensis
I look up Psilocybe cubensis and Panaeolus cyanescens's growing condition on the faq or search engine and find
Psilocybe cubensis, and Panaeolus cyanescens grow next to each other on cow poop in temps around 70-90F they show up after a decent rain in spring and summer when its warm...
-------------------
Alright now the question is, do you understand how to repete that?

costa rica is fantastic. I went last summer and saw some really unusual mushrooms, nothing like CA or US, sincerely tropical purple/pink translucent mushrooms that look like plastic.
anyways, I never found cubes or really looked because i was quite content with the fantastic food and beer.
I am trying to go back this summer, costa rica is worth it.
curious: how much did you pay for your ticket??
