Where's the beef?
    #805283 - 08/08/02 07:03 PM (15 years, 2 months ago)

I spend most of my time in the Political Discussion forum because it seems every time I drop in here all the threads are about spirituality rather than secular philosophy. Politics is merely one of the end products of philosophy, i.e. a practical implementation in a social context of the philosophical branch called "ethics".

Are there ever any discussions here about metaphysics? Or epistemology? Or ethics or aesthetics? Any knock-down drag 'em out battles over the relative merits of the Aristotelian viewpoint versus that of Kant and the other mystics?

Maybe the search engine is broken, but I couldn't find a single thread about Ayn Rand and Objectivism, or Dewey and Pragmatism, or Skinner and Behaviorism.

I enjoy the political discussions, but they're a bit restrictive, since so few of those contributing to the threads there have much of a grounding in philosophy as a whole, and tend to argue concretes rather than principles.

I need brain food! Can someone point me to a nice juicy thread involving -- oh, I don't know -- the inherent contradictions of solipsism, or the basis of concept-formation, or something along those lines?

Much obliged.

pinky

An old wise man once said:

I say:
"If you can't find a thread that piques your interrest - start one"

Give it a shot man...pick a topic and see who joins in

Glad to have you aboard, Pinky.

Um, no, we usually discuss the merits of the ego, crop circles, and Hitler. Stuff like that.

What are your major influences in philosophy?

I am an Aristotelian and proud of it!

Cheers,

[edit] I just created a thread for you. It's called, "Quantum Mechanics, tool of Satan?" I hope you like it. [/edit]

What are your major influences in philosophy?

You could call me an Aristotelian, or a Realist, or an Objectivist, depending on what side of the philosophical fence you are coming from. I am definitely an atheist.

I guess Objectivist is the closest fit, although I find Objectivism lacking in certain areas. Its major plus (and this is a HUGE one) is that it is the only philosophical system I have come across that starts from self-evident axioms and covers the entire range of philosophy from metaphysics to politics without a single contradiction. At least I have yet to encounter a single contradiction. It is the only system I know of which adheres to observable and testable reality.

Having said that, it does have some blank spaces. The one that I find the most intriguing is that it has no explanation of the nature of consciousness. It accepts as self-evident that consciousness is an attribute of sufficiently complex living entities, but that's it. Objectivism doesn't even try to address the "why" of that fact.

Objectivism is, of course, merely a refinement and extension of Aristotelianism. Aristotle, though undeniably a genius, had areas where he was both contradictory and arbitrary, but he is still THE man in philosophy.

Brilliantly said. I could say the same for myself when it comes to influences.

You might find this place a bit dull for your liking. We do not normally discuss the authors you mentioned nor do we discuss anything deeper, as a rule, than logical fallacies and those are usually the simple ones.

I don't have lots of time and I type with the speed of a snail but if you want to discuss a few things I will try to dialogue with you as much as time allows for.

I would be interested in your take on Buttonion's points in the "human life: debate though. As philosophically astute as you are you nust be able to contribute something.

Cheers,

Hey, if you'd like... search for "heteroabsolutism" or "William James" or "Nietzsche"... I got few bites on them, but maybe you'll bite.

No, I love the content of the forum as it is just as I feel affection for most everyone who posts here. But my chemical imbalance has a lot to do with that I think.

Cheers,
