Can I dunk without rolling?

Just curious if it's ok to dunk my cakes after birthing, without rolling in verm. I don't have any verm, and by the time I get some the cakes will probably be ready to go into the fc. Should I just skip the dunking? Let me know. Thanks.

rick, you can get vermiculite from walmart and homedepot, basically any garden store or supermarket. its worth getting. but in answer to you Q, yes you can dunk and not roll. the vermiculite is HIGHLY beneficial tho...so id invest $3 and grab a bag on your way home from work or somethin...GL

Yes, I believe I saw on one of the RR videos that it is okay. Dont quote me on that but I am pretty sure you can.

Thanks for the replies. I love this site. Sorry if this has been asked before, but do I have to do anything to the verm before rolling? Or is it safe to use right out of the bag?

your cake should be fully colonized when you roll it. so yea it will be safe to use right out of the bag. now if you've opened the bag a bunch of times and you were using it for a casing id throw it in the oven for a little bit just to be safe.

vermiculite is sterile out of the bag. but like it was said, if youve opened it a time or two, go ahead and heat it at about 350 for 10 minutes or so...i always heat mine. even straight out of the bag. if you heat a whole cookie sheet and then pour it all into a sterile contanier, you can just scoop out whats needed to roll your cakes and that way you dont get anything on all the sterile verm. but if im not mistaken, vermiculite is created by heating a substance to an insanely hot temp, SO long story short. you do NOT HAVE TO sterilize it, but you never know what it might have gotten in/on it between the factory and the bagging...

verm isn't sterile out of the bag. the fact that it is made in a high temp environment is hardly relevant. the fact is it's a mineral with no nutritional value so it doesn't harbor bacteria well.
i've never really heard about contams from a fully colonized cake being rolled in verm.
if you mist several times per day the verm layers benefits will be unnoticeable but most people neglect their cakes and don't mist/fan 5+ times a day.

Just because it is a mineral with no nutritional value doesn't mean there can't be spores on it. But, if your cakes are fully colonized it shouldn't be an issue.

I lost a few cakes to green mold after dunking and rolling with fresh vermiculite. Lots of pins on them too. I packed moist vermiculite to the cakes instead of rolling them in dry and misting. I don't know if that had anything to do with it.

could be either your verm had trich on it.
the dunking allowed the cakes to grow trich.
or the water had trich in it.
dry verm shouldn't have bacteria on it from the mfg it would need to land on it. next time bake ur verm for 30mins at 350f if your paranoid, rolling in dry is a better idea but I don't know how much it should matter.
