Burn, Baby, Burn!

BELGRADE, Serbia -- Serb rioters broke into the U.S. Embassy Thursday and set fire to an office after a large protest against Kosovo's independence that drew an estimated 150,000 people.
Masked attackers broke into the building, which has been closed this week, and tried to throw furniture from an office. A blaze broke out but firefighters swiftly put out the flames.
Authorities drove armored jeeps down the street and fired tear gas to clear the crowd. The protesters dispersed into side streets where they continued clashing with authorities.
The neighboring Croatian Embassy also was attacked by the same group of protesters.
In Washington, State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said the U.S. ambassador to Serbia was at his home and in contact with U.S. officials.
Serbia has "a responsibility now to devote the adequate resources to ensure that that facility is protected," McCormack said.
The protesters appeared to have been in the Embassy's consular building area, McCormack said. U.S. security officials and Marine guards were in a separate part of the compound, the chancery, but no staff were present at the Embassy, he said.
More than a dozen nations have recognized Kosovo's declaration of independence on Sunday, including the United States, Britain, France and Germany.
But the declaration by Kosovo's ethnic Albanian leadership has been rejected by Serbia's government and the ethnic Serbians who populate northern Kosovo. Russia, China and numerous other nations have also condemned the declaration, saying it sets a precedent that separatist groups around the world will seek to emulate.
Kosovo, which is 90 percent ethnic Albanian, has not been under Belgrade's control since 1999, when NATO launched airstrikes to halt a Serbian crackdown on ethnic Albanian separatists. A U.N. mission has governed Kosovo since, with more than 16,000 NATO troops and KFOR, a multiethnic force, policing the province.
But Serbia _ and Kosovo's Serbs, who make up less than 10 percent of Kosovo's population _ refuse to give up Kosovo, a territory considered the ancient cradle of Serbs' state and religion.
Earlier Thursday, police estimated that about 150,000 people had attended a rally in the Serbian capital. The crowd waved Serbian flags and carried signs reading "Stop USA terror." One group set fire to a red-and-black Albanian flag.

So are you encouraging this thuggish behavior? That's what I get from the thread title...just wondering.

Not at all, I just think my country is getting a little well-deserved anger vented at it for it's nation-building policies and schismatic tendencies.
Also, I really like fire.

If kosovo wants it's independence, they can go for it. I also feel that if serbia doesn't like that, they can fight back. In the end, they may just end up with another war in the area.

Can someone please explain to me in an unbiased manner why the United States, Britain, France and Germany support the independence while China and Russia do not?

Its something called 'Special interests'. You may want to look into that next time you advocate world government.

the rioters won't do shit, they won't pick up guns, and in the end they'll just get their heads bashed and they'll go home.

You may want to look at the state of our own country before commenting on that subject next time.

I'm merely hinting at the potential. In reference to our own country, you do remember how it was founded?
(I would of course have supported a more peacefull solution, not being a fan of violence towards people).

I'm not particularly excited about this turn of events. My cousin is being deployed in Kosovo in the next month or so.
He already went to -both- Gulf Wars. He's in his thirties and married. LET THE MAN STAY HOME.

The U.S. recognized the independence claims (as did estonia) so they assume the States and every other country is against them.

I take it you are a strict constitutionalist? The war is legal in terms of how the constitution has been interpreted by the courts. Although I agree with you in that it should change to a more limited interpretation, anyone joining the military should be aware of the reality of how the government is functioning, and in this case, a war there has been a definite possibility for decades.

I'm not a strict anything. You asked me why it was unconsitutional and 'illegal' according even to international law. I told you to go and at least educate yourself on the constitution. I think those troops should come home as they have been hoodwinked into an illegal position. Any peititon that comes my way, I will sign it. Simple as that.

i think every country should send their troops to other countries, like a student exchange program. send all U.S. troops to Switzerland, all Swedish troops to Japan, all Brazilian troops to Ukraine and so on. ALL the troops.

I've read the constitution several times (in fact, I have a paper copy right here) and am aware of the war powers of congress and the executive ability to sign treaties, but if you think that our government runs solely based off the words in the constitution, then you have a sore misunderstanding of how the government is run.
(All I did was ask you to defend your statement, I'm all ears for rational responses, even if I disagree with them. But telling me to try to guess what your meaning is is just ridiculous. I'm not trying to antagonize you, and I hope you're not doing so to me. Forgive me if I've misinterpreted your actions, these instances occur on the internet sometimes).

I don't for a second think the government does at all. But I certainly think that the president and all congressmen that 'swear' on the consitituion should take a look at the fucking thing!
