Laptops with non-integrated power plug
    #8050685 - 02/21/08 07:23 AM (15 years, 11 months ago)

Since there seems to be an issue with laptops having the power plug (a high failure part) attached directly to the logic board (an expensive to repair part), I am creating a list of laptops that I see that have a power plug that is not part of the logic board, but connects to the logic board via wire instead. I will also update the list with any non-power plug laptops that I run across.

Almost all Apple Laptops, including the MacBook, MacBook Pro, and MacBook Air are power plug friendly.

I just pulled apart a Sony VAIO VGN-N130G and it was power plug friendly.

Why is the power plug a high failure part?

My 4 year old Dell Latitude C840 is not power plug friendly, for what that's worth

> Why is the power plug a high failure part?

Because it mechanically couples to something external from the laptop and takes a lot of abuse. Some plug designs work better than others.

yeah, they solder that shit directly to the motherboard... ideally the platic feet take the abuse, but really its the soldered joints... which then get destroyed.

Thanks Seuss, great post.

Will never buy another laptop w/ a soldered jack after my problems with dell...
